EDITORIAL PAGE "Black people had some choices," Toni Morrison once told a Globe reporter. "They could say life is limited for you, make the best of it; there are certain things forbidden to you, and you might as well know that now. Or they said all things are possible and don't let anybody tell you that you can't do something. I came from a family that said the latter." Nevertheless, even Chloe Anthony Wofford, known to the world as Toni Morrison, admits that as a girl growing up during the Depression in a Northeastern Ohio steel town, her only expectation for the life ahead was that she "just had to get a job." Even with her gifts of imagination, the most coveted literary honor, the Nobel Prize for Literature, which she received this week, was not in her field of vision. It was in the midst of a stifling marriage, at the age of 29 or 30, that Morrison found liberation in her pen. "I had no will, no judgment, no perspective, no power, no authority, no self just this brutal sense of irony, melancholy and a trembling respect for words. I wrote like someone with a dirty habit." That habit, that respect for words, has not only spawned six brilliantly crafted novels but a generation of readers and writers.

Recalling the easy-going midwestern town of her youth, Morrison says it was "an escape from stereotyped black settings neither plantation nor ghetto." Her parents were Alabama sharecroppers who migrated north in search of better opportunites for their family. Her father, a welder, worked exceptionally hard to support his four children, at times holding down three jobs simultaneously. As a young girl, Morrison read many of the classics, including Jane Austen, Tolstoy, and Flaubert, and she graduated from high school with honors.

Links to other Toni Morrison Websites In a film interview, Morrison has stated, "I suppose The Bluest Eye is about one's dependency on the world for identification, self-value, feelings of worth." Toni Morrison has been consistently insightful and helpful critic of her work. With regard to her first novel, she has indicated that her plan was to take love and the effects of its scarcity in the world as her major themes, concentrating on the interior lives of her characters, especially those of an enclosed community. Her stated aim is to show "how to survive whole in a world where we are all of us, in some measure, victims of something." Morrison's broad vision extends beyond the individual to one that explores self-discovery in relation to a "shared history." In order to dramatize the destructive effects of this kind of dependency, she intentionally exaggerates to find the limits. From Toni Morrison: A Voice With Wings by Cindy H.

Toni Morrison
Toni Morrison, the first black woman to receive Nobel Prize in Literature, was born Chloe Anthony Wofford on February 18, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, U.S.A. She was the second of four children of George Wofford, a shipyard welder and Ramah Willis Wofford. Her parents moved to Ohio from the South to escape racism and to find better opportunities in the North. Her father was a hardworking and dignified man. While the children were growing up, he worked three jobs at the same time for almost 17 years. He took a great deal of pride in the quality of his work, so that each time he welded a perfect seam he'd also weld his name onto the side of the ship. He also made sure to be well-dressed, even during the Depression. Her mother was a church-going woman and she sang in the choir. At home, Chloe heard many songs and tales of Southern black folklore. The Woffords were proud of their heritage. Lorain was a small industrial town populated with immigrant Europeans, Mexicans and Southern blacks who lived next to each other. Chloe attended an integrated school. In her first grade, she was the only black student in her class and the only one who could read. She was friends with many of her white schoolmates and did not encounter discrimination until she started dating. She hoped one day to become a dancer like her favorite ballerina, Maria Tallchief, and she also loved to read. Her early favorites were the Russian writers Tolstoy and Dostoyevski, French author Gustave Flaubert and English novelist Jane Austen. She was an excellent student and she graduated with honors from Lorain High School in 1949.
