By Holly Hedge To pick up a Toni Morrison book is to pick up a biography of a nation of people who have shaped the body of America since their exodus from Africa. With seven extraordinary novels and four major literary awards, including the 1988 Politer Prize and 1993 Nobel Prize under her belt, Toni Morrison is in the midst of a more than fulfilling career as a master novelist. Notables from Ralph Ellison to Angela Davis have been champions of her work declaring her one of the best writers ever. Morrison's prose, laced with soft traces of feminism can proudly compete with the highest praised novels out there. To pick up a Toni Morrison book is to pick up a biography of a nation of people who have shaped the body of America since their exodus from Africa. To sit and read a Morrison book is be confronted with a painfully brilliant light. From this point, you can either squint, shut the book and remain ignorant, or you can step into this light and become educated like never before. This light I speak of is the truth. Morrison entered into this world on February 18, 1931, in the town of Lorain, Ohio as Chloe Anthony Wofford. She was born unto George Wofford, a shipyard welder and Ramah Willis Wofford as their second daughter. When white Southerners cheated the Wofford's father out of 88 acres of land, they angrily and hastily packed up and eventually settled in the steel-mill community of Lorain. Toni Morrison was extremely studious and participated in various organizations including the drama club, National Honors Society and serving as student body Treasurer at Lorain High School.

Autumn 1998 (6.3) The Bird in Our Hand: Is It Living or Dead?
Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
Most people know the name of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), legendary Swedish philanthropist, who established the Nobel Prize at the beginning of this century. Few people, however, know that he had two older brothers, Robert (1829-1890) and Ludwig (1831-1888), who were the founders of the Nobel Brothers' Petroleum Company in Baku, and among the first international entrepreneurs to develop Baku's oil. It was Alfred's money, not only from the manufacture of dynamite, but also from oil in Baku that facilitated the establishment of this most coveted prize in the world. Toni Morrison, American writer and 1993 Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature. Photo: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (1997). In fact, Alfred was the largest single stockholder in the Nobel brothers' oil company. When the fund for the Nobel Prize was established in 1901, Alfred's accumulated wealth was valued at 31 million Swedish crowns, of which 12 percent is said to have come from oil in Baku. Swedish historian E. Bargengren, who had access to the Nobel's family archives, insists that it was the decision to allow withdrawal of Alfred's money from the company that was the "decisive factor that enabled the Nobel Prizes to be established." For this reason, Azerbaijanis, too, feel related to this prestigious award which identifies some of the world's greatest giants who have contributed to the intellectual development of mankind. The Prize is bestowed in six categories-physics, physiology, chemistry, literature, peace and economics. Again, the season for naming the annual Nobel Prize winners is here. Every September and October the prizes are announced, and every December awards are bestowed in Sweden and Norway (Peace).

Grade 10 About this book The Breedlove family has moved from the rural south to urban Lorain, Ohio, and the displacement, in addition to grinding work conditions and poverty, contributes to the family's dysfunction. Told from the perspectives of the adolescent sisters, Claudia and Frieda MacTeer, Morrison's narrative weaves its way through the four seasons and traces the daughter's (Pecola Breedlove) descent into madness. Through flashback and temporal shifts, Morrison provides readers with the context and history behind the Breedloves' misery and Pecola's obsessive desire to have "the bluest eyes." Chloe attended an integrated school. In her first grade, she was the only black student in her class and the only one who could read. She was friends with many of her white schoolmates and did not encounter discrimination until she started dating. She hoped one day to become a dancer like her favorite ballerina, Maria Tallchief, and she also loved to read. Her early favorites were the Russian writers Tolstoy and Dostoyevski, French author Gustave Flaubert and English novelist Jane Austen. She was an excellent student and she graduated with honors from Lorain High School in 1949.

    Morrison, Toni,
Morrison, 1993 Thomas Engstrom/Gamma Liaison original name CHLOE ANTHONY WOFFORD (b. Feb. 18, 1931, Lorain, Ohio, U.S.), American writer noted for her examination of black experience (particularly black female experience) within the black community. She received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. Morrison grew up in the American Midwest. She attended Howard University (B.A., 1953) in Washington, D.C., and Cornell University (M.A., 1955) in New York. After teaching at Texas Southern University for two years, she taught at Howard from 1957 to 1964. In 1965 she became a fiction editor. From 1984 she taught writing at the State University of New York at Albany, leaving in 1989 to join the faculty of Princeton University. Morrison's first book, The Bluest Eye (1970), is a novel of initiation concerning a victimized adolescent black girl who is obsessed by white standards of beauty and longs to have blue eyes. In 1973 a second novel, Sula was published; it examines (among other issues) the dynamics of friendship and the expectations for conformity within the community. Song of Solomon (1977) is told by a male narrator in search of his identity; its publication brought Morrison to national attention.

GUYANA UNDER SIEGE Toni Morrison – Nobel Lecture December 7, 1993 HOME "Once upon a time there was an old woman. Blind but wise." Or was it an old man? A guru, perhaps. Or a griot soothing restless children. I have heard this story, or one exactly like it, in the lore of several cultures. "Once upon a time there was an old woman. Blind. Wise." In the version I know the woman is the daughter of slaves, black, American, and lives alone in a small house outside of town. Her reputation for wisdom is without peer and without question. Among her people she is both the law and its transgression. The honor she is paid and the awe in which she is held reach beyond her neighborhood to places far away; to the city where the intelligence of rural prophets is the source of much amusement. One day the woman is visited by some young people who seem to be bent on disproving her clairvoyance and showing her up for the fraud they believe she is. Their plan is simple: they enter her house and ask the one question the answer to which rides solely on her difference from them, a difference they regard as a profound disability: her blindness. They stand before her, and one of them says, "Old woman, I hold in my hand a bird. Tell me whether it is living or dead."

    Toni Morrison (1931-present)
Chronology compiled by Meg Schlepenbach, Millikin University
    Introduction to Toni Morrison
First and foremost, Toni Morrison writes as a black woman with the audience of black women in mind. Though many of the themes, emotions and motivational elements present in her works apply to all people, Morrison works to invert and dispel many of the stereotypes present in writings by and about black women. Morrison herself claims that one of her motivations for writing as a black woman writer is to allow her fellow black women to "repossess, re-name, [and] re-own."
In particular, Morrison has helped black women "repossess" their identities by creating characters who not only go against typical white American stereotypes of black females, but also who illustrate many of the overlooked strengths and characteristics of black womanhood. For instance, Morrison's works often concern themselves with fleshing out and thus denying the stereotype of the nurturing, content "black Mammy." Instead of presenting a black mother in this pat way, Morrison illuminates the psychological and emotional elements of motherhood in the context of the African-American struggle.
Morrison's writing is also characterized by its unique way of dealing with narrative. Instead of using straightforward narration and clear chronology, Morrison often plays with the order of scenes and the ways narration is presented. The narrator may change frequently, or the narrator may be separate from the person through which the reader is currently viewing the action.
