Ocupà diversos càrrecs consulars a Madrid, Lisboa, Petropolis (Brasil), Los Angeles i Rapallo (Italia). Entre els seus poemes posteriors destaquen Ternuras (1924), recopilació de cançons per a canalla, i

Her Life
Her Work Tala ... Courtney's Home Her Life TOP OF THE PAGE Originally known as Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga, Gabriela Mistral may not be one of the most well-known Latin-American poets of the twentieth century, but her passionate poetry and distinctive voice gained her the honor of becoming the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945.
A member of the cultural committee of the League of Nations and Chilean consul to Madrid, Lisbon, Nice, and Naples, Mistral combined her educational ministry with her poetic talent to influence those she visited. In 1922 she was able to further her influence in Mexico, where upon the invitation of Jose Vasconcelos, she helped enhance the Mexican government’s attempts at educational reform.
Education and reform were constant focuses of Mistral throughout her life, and it is quite possible that through her travels and exposure as an educator, her poetry became well known and valued by those with whom she came in contact. Having lived through two world wars, Gabriela Mistral’s poetry occasionally slipped through the cracks of the cultural realm while the rest of the world paid more attention to political issues and literary works. This fact may have influenced the long-term popularity of Mistral’s work, but her poetry remains full of emotion and sentiment, portraying her thoughts about suffering, love, and nostalgia in a distinct and passionately intimate manner.

How They Pick the Nobel Prize in Literature

Special to The Christian Science Monitor
The award of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Dario Fo in 1997 delighted some and galled other disciples of literature around the world. ERNEST HEMMINGWAY, 1954
(PHOTO ENHANCEMENT BY STAFF; PHOTOS /AP) How could the folks in Stockholm choose this Italian joker, skipping over America's Arthur Miller, Mexico's Carlos Fuentes, the Czech Republic's Milan Kundera, South Africa's J.M. Coetzee, and dozens of other notable writers? Picking an actor/playwright, known for his assaults on capitalism, Catholic religiosity, and the Italian government, raised a din of discord among the literate. Contention is nothing new to the prize; the choice of laureates has been marbled with dispute since the first winner, Sully Prudhomme, was announced in 1901.

the Occitans Occitan civilisation was at the head of Europ in the Middle Ages. This way of life, later destroyed by the Crusade against the Albigeois, is expressed as the finest by the Troubadours, the spirit of tolerance and mutual respect was wiped out by arms and at the stake by the Inquisition. The use of Occitan as an official language was forbidden in the 16th century by the Edict of Villers-Cotterêts and the country began to lose its autonomy. Down through the centuries linguistic and cultural expression was waned and been replaced by half-hearted provincialism. The French revolution installed a « witch hunt » against the regional languages backed up by a strong policy disdainful of them. During the 19th century ther was a linguistic « come back » with the Felibrige movment. Occitan literature was internationally recognized through the Nobel Prize awarded to Frederic Mistral in 1903. The will to combine their roots with the present day situation will enable the Occitans to find in their language and culture the necessary hope and an active tool in the making of Europe from the year 200 and into the future. occitans occitans and indians Streching beyond centuries and over continents, the destinies of two martyr populations respond to each otherlike a tragic echo. Burrowing down to find its roots in the very heart of the individual, the oppressed word builts strange convergences creating a fertile fraternity founded on the Being and the respect of all things. At last stripped of the fancy-dress rags they have been decked with for so long, the Occitans and the Indians speak once more and tell each other how they were and how they are.

January Solemnity of Mary The Church chose to honor Mary as the Mother of God more than 1500 years ago as part of the Octave of the Nativity which begins on Christmas and includes the feast of the Holy Family. While saluting the mother of Jesus, we do not forget that she is also our mother, the mother of all who belong to the Body of Christ. As we begin a new year, we honor Mary by keeping our hearts open to God and remaining ever-virgin—that is, remaining the ground of all possibilities. As part of her will, she left the rights to all her work published in South America to the children of Monte Grande. In 1945, Gabriela Mistral was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, making her the first Spanish-American writer to receive such an honor. PSEUDONYM
Lucila Godoy Alcayaga spent her childhood in the desolate regions of northern Chile, abandoned by her father and misunderstood by her mentors. It was thus that she began a brilliant career in education, working in a great number of schools and Chilean communities, until she arrived in Mexico, in 1922. There she invented, with the help of Jose Vasconcelos, then Minister of Education in Mexico, a method, still in practice, of teaching early language skills to peasants in marginal communities. While in Mexico, she also contributed to the development of mobile libraries. Her contribution to educational reform in Mexico was so important that, on the day of her farewell ceremony, four thousand school children sang rounds in the Castle of Chapultepec.

Nobel Prize for Literature
The Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded by the Swedish Academy since 1901 to a person who has made the greatest contribution to the field of literature, as determined by the Nobel Committee. Nominations for the prize are made by members of the Academy, members of similar academies and societies, professors of literature and language, former Nobel laureates, and presidents of author organizations. The monetary award is a share of the interest on the endowment made by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, which is held in trust by the Nobel Foundation.
