Lasker Awards and the Nobel
The Lasker Medical Science Awards in basic research, clinical research, special achievement and public service, which have been bestowed since l945, provide a chronicle of the progress of biomedical research over the last half-century. The Lasker Foundation is proud that many of the amazing discoveries and achievements of Lasker Award winners are recognized, in addition, by the prestigious Nobel Prize. As of 2002, sixty-six Lasker winners have gone on to win the Nobel. The following statistics are of interest:
  • 47.5% of the Basic Lasker Winners go on to win the Nobel

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

Howard Temin and David Baltimore independently discover the enzyme reverse transcriptase in RNA viruses. Reverse transcriptase uses RNA as a template to synthesize a single-stranded DNA complement. This process establishes a pathway for genetic information flow from RNA to DNA. With Dulbecco, Baltimore and Temin are awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1975.
Stanley Cohen, Annie Chang, Robert Helling and Herbert Boyer show that extrachromosomal bits of DNA called plasmids act as vectors for maintaining cloned genes in bacteria. They show that if DNA is broken into fragments and combined with plasmid DNA, such recombinant DNA molecules will reproduce if inserted into bacterial cells. The discovery is a major breakthrough for genetic engineering, allowing for such advances as gene cloning and the modification of genes.
Georg Kohler and Cesar Milstein physically fuse mouse lymphocytes with neoplastic mouse plasma cells to yield hybrid cells called hybridomas that can produce specific antibodies and survive indefinitely in tissue culture. This approach offers a limitless supply of monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies permit the generation of diagnostic tests that are highly specific. They also function as probes to study cell function. With Jerne, Kohler and Milstein are awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1984.

    LUIS AGOTE

    WORLD SCIENTISTS' CALL FOR ACTION
    AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT
Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.

Evidence presented in the Origin of Species challenged both the accepted scientific and religious views of Western culture that had been taught for centuries. The first edition sold out on the day it was published. Theologians quickly labeled Darwin "the most dangerous man in England"... Yet, after reading it, Darwin's friend and colleague T. H. Huxley had a different reaction: "How extremely stupid not to have thought of that."

I would also ask you to please note that I am unable to offer any kind of advice for those seeking treatment or clinical advice on new therapies. ARGENTINA: Dictatorships and science
One issue which divides WAISers concerns US support for Latin American military dictatorships, especially those of Argentina. One way to judge governments is by their treatment of scientists. Hitler forced many to leave Germany. In addition to being once a prosperous country, Argentina had notable scientific institutions. Years ago I had the pleasure of hosting Argentine scientists Bernardo Houssay, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1947. Now Natacha has posted an article from La Nación (3/25/02) of Buenos Aires on the death at74 in Cambridge, England of Cesar Milstein, who shared the same prize in 1984. My guess is that he was a pupil of Houssay, but the article says he was a pupil of Andrés Stoppani, who I think worked with Houssay. For the full text in Spanish, see: http://www.lanacion.com.ar/02/03/25/sl_383587 The tragedy is that the brain drain from Argentina continues, worse than ever. Ronald Hilton - 3/25/02
