Cesar Milstein
Born in Bahia Bianca, Argentina, Milstein is an immunologist. They are called "monoclonal antibodies," and Milstein's pioneering discovery of how to form them made him co-winner of a 1984 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He had merged cells that produce natural antibodies with those of a tumor that multiplies indefinitely. The result: a new combined cell that generates a specific anti-body in quantity - to target single disease organisms invading the body, unlike the generalized attack of most antibodies. The landmark development in 1975 came from a gifted researcher whose model was Louis Pasteur. His Ph.D. was earned at England's University of Cambridge following studies at the University of Buenos Aires. Dividing his time between South America and Great Britain , Milstein today holds that country'' prestigious Companion of Honour award. Source: Dor LeDor

Dr Cesar Milstein, one of the great post-war figures in British science, has died. He was 74. The researcher, who was born in Argentina, won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1984 for his pioneering work on the immune system.
An outstanding contribution to Britain's science, health and wealth creation
Prof Sir George Radda, MRC With Dr Georges Kohler, he found a way to make any required antibody in pure form, in the test tube. Although these monoclonal antibodies, as they are termed, have not quite lived up to the hype that once dubbed them "magic bullets", they have nonetheless found wide usage in medicine - from treating cancer and transplant rejection to diagnosing Aids and pregnancy. Dr Milstein died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on Sunday. The cause of death was not announced. 'Sorely missed' He will be remembered as key figure in the hothouse of scientific talent established in Cambridge at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

Specificity: A model of a monoclonal antibody
By BBC News Online's John Newell Scientists have gathered in London to celebrate one of the great discoveries in modern medicine - monoclonal antibodies. It is 25 years ago this summer that Cambridge researchers Drs Cesar Milstein and George Kohler found a way to make any required antibody in pure form, in the test tube. It was a breakthrough that has brought science within touching distance of a "magic bullet" - a tailored weapon that can home in and destroy the causes of disease. Monoclonal antibodies still have some way to go to fulfil this dream but their obvious potential was sufficient to earn Milstein and Kohler a Nobel Prize in 1984. The UK's Medical Research Council, which funds the lab where the men did their pioneering work, paid its own tribute on Thursday by honouring Dr Milstein with its first Millennium Medal for outstanding scientific achievement. Sadly, Dr Kohler could not share the award - he died in 1995 aged just 49.

Harnessing potential of the antibody
April 8 2002 Cesar Milstein was a convivial figure in Cambridge scientific circles. Cesar Milstein, scientist, 1927-2002 Cesar Milstein, who has died aged 74, was joint winner of the 1984 Nobel Prize for Medicine after his achievement in developing a method of producing tailor-made antibodies in large quantities in a laboratory. The discovery revolutionised bio-medical research and spawned an international multi-billion-dollar biotechnology industry. Milstein's discovery in 1975 of a method to mass-produce antibodies has led to ways of attacking cancer, diagnosing disease and detecting pregnancies. He approached the National Research Development Corporation to patent the advance, but it notoriously wrote of his invention: "It is certainly difficult for us to identify any immediate practical application which could be pursued as a commercial venture." THREE PIONEERS IN IMMUNOLOGY SHARE NOBEL PRIZE
Author: By Dick Soderlund, Associated Press Date: Tuesday, October 16, 1984

Section:
NATIONAL/FOREIGN Three researchers won the 1984 Nobel Prize in Medicine yesterday for pioneering studies in immunology that have led to promising new treatments for diseases ranging from allergies to cancer. The awarding medical faculty at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute said the work of the three scientists already is being applied in the fight against cancer and in organ transplantation. Niels Kaj Jerne, 73, a Dane born in London, was cited along with his West German colleague at a Swiss research institute, Georges Koehler, 38, and Cambridge University researcher Cesar Milstein, 57, an Argentine. The three reacted with delighted surprise to the announcement. A Karolinska spokesman said the laureates' work is "one of the great research achievements in the 1970s, next to developments in the genetics field," for which researchers have previously received Nobel prizes. The Karolinska professors cited the three for their work in deciphering how the body's defenses against disease work and how to manipulate them to fight disease.
