I was born in 1925, in The Hague, the Netherlands, as the third child of Pieter van der Meer and Jetske Groeneveld, both of Frisian origin. I had three sisters.
My father was a schoolteacher and my mother came from a teacher's family. Under these conditions it is not astonishing that learning was highly prized; in fact, my parents made sacrifices to be able to give their children a good education.
I visited the Gymnasium in The Hague and passed my final examination (in the sciences section) in 1943. Because the Dutch universities had just been closed at that time under the German occupation, I spent the next two years attending the humanities section of the Gymnasium. Meanwhile, my interest in physics and technology had been growing; I dabbled in electronics, equipped the parental home with various gadgets and assisted my brilliant and inspiring physics teacher (U.Ph. Lely) with the preparation of numerous demonstrations.
From 1945 onwards, I studied "Technical Physics" at the

(b. Nov. 24, 1925, The Hague, Neth.), Dutch physical engineer who in 1984, with Carlo Rubbia , received the Nobel Prize for Physics for his contribution to the discovery of the massive, short-lived subatomic particles designated W and Z that were crucial to the unified electroweak theory posited in the 1970s by Steven Weinberg, Abdus Salam, and Sheldon Glashow. After receiving a degree in physical engineering from the Higher Technical School in Delft, Neth., in 1952, van der Meer worked for the Philips Company. In 1956 he joined the staff of CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), near Geneva, where he remained until his retirement in 1990.

van der Meer, Simon 1925-, Dutch physical engineer. He spent his career at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN; now the European Laboratory for Particle Physics), where he did his most important work with Carlo Rubbia . They discovered the subatomic particles W and Z, which convey the weak force, one of nature's four fundamental forces. For their discovery, they were awarded the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics.

From 1945 onwards, I studied "Technical Physics" at the University of Technology, Delft, where I specialized in measurement and regulation technology under C.J.D.M. Verhagen. The physics taught in this newly created subsection of an old and established engineering school, although of excellent quality, was of necessity somewhat restricted and I have often felt regrets at not having had the intensive physics training that many of my colleagues enjoyed. Nevertheless, if I have at times been able to make original contributions in the accelerator field, I cannot help feeling that to a certain extent my slightly amateur approach in physics, combined with much practical experience, was an asset.

AMERICAN GETS NOBEL IN CHEMISTRY; PHYSICS GOES TO 2 EUROPEANS

    Section:
NATIONAL/FOREIGN An American biochemist yesterday won the 1984 Nobel Prize in chemistry for research that led to safer medication, and the prize in physics was awarded to an Italian-Dutch team of nuclear physicists who found particles scientists had sought for 50 years. The chemistry prize went to R. Bruce Merrifield, 63, of Rockefeller University in New York. He was honored for work he did in the 1950s and 1960s, developing a new method of synthesizing amino acid compounds called peptides, which has revolutionized the manufacture of drugs such as high blood pressure medicine, insulin and other hormone medications, and has been used in gene technology. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave the Nobel Prize in physics to Carlo Rubbia, 50, of Italy, a professor at Harvard University, and Simon van der Meer, 59, of the Netherlands, for discovering the W and Z subatomic particles that are believed to carry one of nature's four basic forces - the ''weak interaction force" - in much the same way that photons carry light. The other natural forces are atomic interaction, electromagnetism and gravitation. Physicists have been working since the atom smasher was developed in the 1930s to prove that the four forces actually are one, Albert Einstein's ''unification theory."
