Marshall, George Catlett (1880-1959), American general of the army, chief of staff, secretary of state, and secretary of defense. His career roughly paralleled the first 50 years of the 20th century. He saw his country grow from an isolated position to one of world leadership. As a global soldier-statesman, he was a leader in the victory over the Axis powers in World War II . Marshall was the only professional soldier ever awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. He was born in Uniontown, Pa., on Dec. 31, 1880, and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1902, where he was first captain. Commissioned a lieutenant of infantry, Marshall served in the Philippines from 1902 to 1903. In 1907 he was first in his class at the School of the Line, Fort Leavenworth, Kans. After completing a more advanced course, he served as an instructor there from 1908 to 1910. From 1913 to 1916 he served a second tour in Philippines, and then had brief tours in San Francisco and Governors Island, N.Y. In World War I he went with 1st Division units to France in 1917. As chief of operations, he helped plan the first U.S. campaigns in France. Later, at general headquarters, he helped plan the attack in the St. Mihiel salient and the Meuse-Argonne offensive, serving as chief of operations, First Army, in the final weeks of the war. From 1919 to 1924, Marshall was senior aide to Gen. John J. Pershing. From 1924 to 1927 he was executive officer of the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tientsin, China. As chief of instruction at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., from 1927 to 1932, he trained many who later became key officers in World War II.

George Catlett Marshall was a soldier best remembered for what he did for peace. Born in Pennsylvania, Marshall developed his leadership skills at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. As a junior Army officer, Marshall earned a reputation for blunt honesty and brilliant problem-solving. He held important posts during World War I, and in World War II, Marshall became head of the Army. After the war, Marshall put his problem-solving skills to an even more important use. As secretary of state, he convinced Congress to give Europe $13 billion to help rebuild. This very popular "Marshall Plan" brought hope and peace to many nations. For his great achievement, Marshall received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.

George Catlett Marshall
A Hero for All Times
GEORGE C. MARSHALL (1880-1959) was one of the most important figures of the twentieth century. He exerted much influence during World War II and the postwar years. United States presidents and members of Congress, as well as world leaders, listened to George Marshall because of his honesty, fairness, and trustworthiness. His personal qualities of selfless character, patriotism, leadership, integrity, and human compassion were admired by people who worked with him. As U.S. Army Chief of Staff during World War II, General Marshall raised and prepared the ground and air forces to help the Allies fight the most destructive war in history against the Axis nations of Germany, Italy, and Japan. But Marshall hated war. When he served as Secretary of State after the war, he proposed to help the European countries rebuild their economies and provide a more peaceful lifestyle. Marshall retired from the U.S. Army after World War II ended in 1945, but President Harry S. Truman called on him to serve his country as Special Ambassador to China (1945-46), as Secretary of State (1947-49), and as Secretary of Defense (1950-51). George Marshall also served as President of the American Red Cross (1949-50). In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in proposing, supporting, and gaining legislative approval of the European Recovery Program (the Marshall Plan) which was instrumental in rebuilding war-torn Europe.

George Catlett Marshall, army general, diplomat, secretary of defense, secretary of state, was the individual with overall general supervision of the military effort during World War II and the only person to be both a secretary of state (1947-49) and secretary of defense (1950-51). Born in Pennsylvania, Marshall was educated at the Virginia Military Institute where he graduated in 1901. During World War I he was stationed in France and won acclaim for his direction of the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. After World War I he was a high-level aide to General John J. Pershing. Prior to the outbreak of World War II he progressed steadily from assistant chief-of-staff of the U.S. Army (July, 1938) to deputy chief of staff (October, 1938), to chief of staff the following year. In 1944, Marshall was promoted to General of the Army. After the second World War, President Truman made Marshall his secretary of state. Marshall was strongly anti-communist and his staunch anti-Soviet policy laid much of the foundation for the ensuing Cold War. The Truman Doctrine, providing aid to nations to fight communism, and the Marshall Plan, reconstructing the demolished European community, were both implemented during Marshall's tenure at the U.S. State Department. . Initially, Marshall resigned from government service in 1949, but was called back to serve briefly as secretary of defense during the Korean conflict. He retired permanently in 1951. In 1953, Marshall won the Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts in Europe.

Before General of the Army George Catlett Marshall, Jr. (1880-1959) could retreat to the home he purchased in 1941 for his retirement, he served as Army chief of staff during World War II, secretary of state, secretary of defense and president of the American Red Cross. Marshall is perhaps best known as the architect of the post-World War II 1947 European Recovery Program, known as the Marshall Plan, which launched the restoration of Europe's economy. Marshall made his home at this gracious Federal house from 1941 until his death in 1959. During these years, Marshall rose from a respected army officer to one of the 20th century's most influential figures. The achievement of the Marshall Plan made him the first career soldier awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Located in the Leesburg Historic District , the brick country house was built in the 1820s, and additions were made several times over the years. It served as a school in the 1850s before passing through various private hands. Marshall bought it for $16,000it was the first home he and his wife ever ownedand named it for the Greek oracle, Dodona, who spoke from the top of the kind of oak trees that proliferate on the 3.92-acre estate.

The Man
Born 1880, graduating from Virginia Military Institute in 1901, George Catlett Marshall served the United States and our Alliance as Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. Marshall's leadership, diplomacy, integrity and vision led the world into an unprecedented era of peace. He was the architect of both the victory and the peace. His personal efforts to extend the helping hand to rebuild a then devastated Europe, led to the $16.2 billion Economic Recovery Program (ERP), known as the Marshall Plan. His plan changed the course of history for mankind. It was the first time in history that the victors rebuilt the vanquished. The Marshall Plan became the foundation for the current unification of the European Union. Soldier, Citizen, and Statesman Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his great humanitarian efforts and multiple contributions to world peace and understanding. " The more I see and talk to him the more I am convinced he's the great one of the age...the Architect of Peace."

GEORGE C. MARSHALL
Soldier and Statesman
As U.S. Army Chief of Staff during World War Two, George Catlett Marshall had an imposing presence and an air of authority. He had an ability to understand the global picture and was able to deal firmly with strong-minded commanders in the field. He was also outstanding in selecting good officers, raising and training a superb army, obtaining weapons and equipment, and was a trusted advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt He was so successful in all of these that when the Supreme Commander for the invasion of Europe was appointed, Roosevelt decided he could not spare Marshall. Though Marshall could have had the command by simply saying he wanted it, he instead insisted that Roosevelt do what he thought would benefit the country most, "with absolutely no thought of my feelings." Instead of Marshall, whom Roosevelt had planned to appoint, Dwight D. Eisenhower was picked. Later, Roosevelt would say that he could not have slept at night knowing Marshall was not nearby. Though deeply disappointed at losing this anticipated battlefield command, Marshall never let it affect his productivity. Winston Churchill called him "the true organizer of victory", and Marshall was named General of the Army, outranking all other five star generals. So the greatest military mind of his time never got a battlefield command, but was the most important in gaining victory.

Succeeding generations must not be allowed to forget his achievements and his example."
