George C. Marshall EB Inc. in full GEORGE CATLETT MARSHALL (b. Dec. 31, 1880, Uniontown, Pa., U.S.d. Oct. 16, 1959, Washington, D.C.), general of the army and U.S. Army chief of staff during World War II (1939-45) and later U.S. secretary of state (1947-49) and of defense (1950-51). The European Recovery Program he proposed in 1947 became known as the Marshall Plan. He received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1953. The following Britannica article on George Marshall was written by Forrest C. Pogue (d. 1996), director, Dwight D. Eisenhower Institute for Historical Research, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1974-84. Early life and military career. Marshall was descended on both sides of his family from settlers who had been in Virginia since the 17th century. His father, a prosperous coke and coal merchant during his younger son's boyhood, was in financial difficulties when George entered the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, in 1897. After a poor beginning at the institute, Marshall's record steadily improved, and he soon showed proficiency in military subjects. Once he had decided on a military career, he concentrated on leadership, ending his last year at the institute as first captain of the corps of cadets.

His career roughly paralleled the first 50 years of the 20th century. He saw his country grow from an isolated position to one of world leadership. As a global soldier-statesman, he was a leader in the victory over the Axis powers in WORLD WAR II . Marshall was the only professional soldier ever awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. He was born in Uniontown, Pa., on Dec. 31, 1880, and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1902, where he was first captain. Commissioned a lieutenant of infantry, Marshall served in the Philippines from 1902 to 1903. In 1907 he was first in his class at the School of the Line, Fort Leavenworth, Kans. After completing a more advanced course, he served as an instructor there from 1908 to 1910. From 1913 to 1916 he served a second tour in Philippines, and then had brief tours in San Francisco and Governors Island, N.Y. In World War I he went with 1st Division units to France in 1917. As chief of operations, he helped plan the first U.S. campaigns in France. Later, at general headquarters, he helped plan the attack in the St. Mihiel salient and the Meuse-Argonne offensive, serving as chief of operations, First Army, in the final weeks of the war. From 1919 to 1924, Marshall was senior aide to Gen. John J. Pershing. From 1924 to 1927 he was executive officer of the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tientsin, China. As chief of instruction at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., from 1927 to 1932, he trained many who later became key officers in World War II.

    George Catlett Marshall
    "A History"
Army General, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense George Catlett Marshall served the United States and the world as a soldier and a statesman. According to Marshall's civilian superior during World War II, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, Marshall was "one of the most selfless public officials" he had ever known. It is not by chance that his name is given to what Sir Winston Churchill described as "the most unsordid act in history" the Marshall Plan through which thousands of millions of U.S. dollars were channeled to a war-torn Europe for economic reconstruction. The son of a coal merchant, Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1880. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901. Commissioned a lieutenant of the infantry, Marshall was first assigned to serve in the Philippines. There, according to historians and biographers, he developed the self-discipline, study habits, and other attributes of command that would allow him to excel. During World War I, Marshall served as Chief of Operations of the First Army and gained recognition for his role in preparing the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918. He later served as Assistant Commandant for Instruction of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. At the school, Marshall made changes in instruction methods and influenced several generals who became prominent in World War II.

    George C. Marshall
    "The Man"
Born in Uniontown in 1880, George Marshall was the Army's commanding General in World War II. As Army Chief of Staff, he was the nation's top soldier. Under Marshall served Gens. Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton and MacArthur. He was, in Winston Churchill's phrase, "the organizer of victory" and the leading Allied strategist. Following the war, he was appointed Secretary of State and later Secretary of Defense. He was twice named Time Magazine's "Man of the Year". In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, the only professional soldier ever so honored.
Marshall spent the first 16 years of his life full-time in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and then, like most college students, spent summers at home while attending VMI in Lexington, Va. In adult conversations, he always referred to Uniontown as "home". Marshall returned to Uniontown any number of times during his early years in the Army and as long as his parents were alive. He visited when he could in the 1920's and 1930's. His first formal visit was in 1939 on "George Marshall Day" in Fayette County. He spoke to school children and rededicated Fort Necessity in 1954. On every commission he ever received, he answered "Pennsylvania" when asked to name his home state. His boyhood friends and remembrances were never far from his mind, and always fondly recalled.
"The town...was very simple and very attractive. ...It was a charming place to live and we had great fun, and it largely centered around our yard, which was fairly large. And the creek, of course was the great jewel of the production.
