Guglielmo Marconi was born at Bologna, Italy, on April 25, 1874, the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian country gentleman, and Annie Jameson, daughter of Andrew Jameson of Daphne Castle in the County Wexford, Ireland. He was educated privately at Bologna, Florence and Leghorn. Even as a boy he took a keen interest in physical and electrical science and studied the works of Maxwell, Hertz, Righi, Lodge and others. In 1895 he began laboratory experiments at his father's country estate at Pontecchio where he succeeded in sending wireless signals over a distance of one and a half miles, thus becoming the inventor of the first practical system of wireless telegraphy.
In 1900 he took out his famous patent No. 7777 for "tuned or syntonic telegraphy" and, on an historic day in December 1901, determined to prove that wireless waves were not affected by the curvature of the Earth, he used his system for transmitting the first wireless signals across the Atlantic between Poldhu, Cornwall, and St. John's, Newfoundland, a distance of 2100 miles.
In 1914 he was commissioned in the Italian Army as a Lieutenant being later promoted to Captain, and in 1916 transferred to the Navy in the rank of Commander. He was a member of the Italian Government mission to the United States in 1917 and in 1919 was appointed Italian plenipotentiary delegate to the Paris Peace Conference. He was awarded the Italian Military Medal in 1919 in recognition of his war service.

He detected radio waves beamed across the Atlantic in 1901, thus giving his telegraph system credibility. In 1909, Marconi shared the Nobel Prize for physics. (The Bettmann Archive) As an Italian national, Marconi played an active role in World War I and represented Italy at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Although he continued to perform experiments in the new field of RADIO, which evolved from wireless telegraphy, his later efforts were mainly directed to affairs of state. He received many honors, including sharing the Nobel Prize for physics in 1909. Marconi, Guglielmo (1874-1937)

Italian electrical engineer who used Heinrich Hertz's method of producing radio waves with a device called a coherer to detect them. The coherer was a container of loosely packed metal filings which conducted significant current only when radio waves fell upon it. He gradually improved his instruments, until he could receive signal over the distance of miles. After the Italian government showed no interest, he went to England and obtained the first patent in the history of radio. On December 12, 1901, he sent a radio signal across the Atlantic. As radio waves should only be capable of traveling in straight line, the success of this experiment was a bit puzzling. This led Heaviside and Kennelly to propose the existence of an electrified layer in the upper atmosphere, soon dubbed the ionosphere Experimental verification of the existence of the ionosphere however, did not come until the propagation work by Appleton and Barnett in England and pulsed radar by Breit and Truve in America. In 1909, Marconi shared the Nobel Prize in physics with Braun.

Guglielmo Marconi : 1874 - 1937 Guglielmo Marconi, b. Apr. 25, 1874, d. July 20, 1937, is known as the father of wireless. He was the son of Giuseppe Marconi of Bologna, Italy, and Annie Jameson, daughter of an Irish family. The young Marconi developed a deep interest in electrical phenomena. When he read of the experiments of Heinrich Hertz on electromagnetic waves, he became obsessed with the idea that such waves could be used for transmitting information without the need for the wire connection of the electric telegraph. In 1894, Marconi began his wireless telegraphy project by repeating some of Hertz's experiments with a number of improvements. Marconi offered his wireless communication system to the Italian government, but it was refused. In London in 1896 he first patented his system and then secured backing for it. In 1897, Marconi formed his wireless telegraph company. His four-circuit tuning, patented in 1900, led to widespread use of his system. Universal adoption of wireless telegraphy was rendered even more certain by Marconi's famous experiment in December 1901. In St. John's, Newfoundland, he received a radio-wave signal sent out from Cornwall, England.
