Naguib Mahfouz calls for Saddam Hussein to resign
Iraq Egypt, International, 3/12/1998 Nobel Prize-winning author Naguib Mahfouz, asked Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to abandon his rule to smooth tensions in the Gulf area.
Mahfouz added that he hoped Saddam would not have become involved in the war with Iran in 1980 - 1988 or in the Gulf War in 1991 and said that he should have dealt with those situations with wisdom, which he did in the recent problem between Iraq and the United Nations.
He expressed his sorrow over the United States' insistence on removing weapons of mass destruction from Iraq without asking the same thing from Israel.
Mahfouz said the world's attitude regarding this matter must be united to free the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction, especially Israel. Previous Stories:

MAHFOUZ, the Nobel lauriate
Egypt, Essay, 8/9/1997 Why did he tell stories? Naguib Mahfouz Abd El-Aziz Ibrahim Ahmed El-Basha. His father, Abd El-Aziz El-Basha, a minor civil servant who later became a copper dealer, had died at the age of 65 in 1937, three years after Mahfouz graduated with a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Fouand (later Cairo) University. His Mother, Fatimah Mustafa Kashisha, the daughter of a sheikh from Al Azhar, instilled in the young Mahfouz a love of Egyptian history by taking him to monuments and museums as a boy, and his love of storytelling by reciting endless tall tales before he went to sleep each night.
Mahafouz first worked in the university administration, then in 1939 as a parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Religious Endowments under the Muslim reform figure Sheikh Mustafa.
Abd El-Razik, his other great mentor, was a socialist protegee of George Bernard Shaw, the modernist Coptic editor Salama Mousa, who in 1939 published his premiere novel, "The Mockery of the Fatter," the first of three set in pharaonic Egypt. Mahfouz won little critical notice until Sayid Qutb praised his third historical novel, "The Struggle for the Ber"‹an allegory of resistance the British set in ancient Egypt under alien Hykses in 1944‹by saying it belonged in the home of every patriotic citizen.
Acclaim mounted in 1947 with appearance of "Midaq Alley," a novel about life in a tiny Cul-de-sac in Khan El-Khalili that took on the size of an entire social universe. His masterwork, however, was yet to came. The massive trilogy (Palace walk, Palace of Desire and Sugar Street), finished in 1952, earned him the state prize for literature in 1957. But by then he had long since stopped producing serious fiction. A psychological crisis, and the sudden loss of the old monarchical society, whose foibles were the very stuff of his fiction, in 1952, turned Mahfouz from novels to screenplays as a way to augment his civil servant income. In the early 1950s he had moved to the film censorship department in what would became the Ministry of Culture. He would continue to work in different positions for the ministry until his government retirement in 1971 at the age of 60. His literary career seemed to have ended just at its peak.

Miscellaneous World Literature, Biographies Mahfouz, Naguib Related Category: Miscellaneous World Literature, Biographies Mahfouz, Naguib [n g Pronunciation Key Bayn al-Qasrayn, Qasr ash-Shawq, and As-Sukkariyya (tr. as Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, 1991, and Sugar Street, 1992) : a sweeping series of novels that traces the history of a middle-class Egyptian Muslim family between 1917 and 1952. In the 1960s Mahfouz abandoned some of his realistic techniques and began to write shorter, faster-paced novels with stream of consciousness narratives and scriptlike dialogue, e.g., The Search (1964, tr. 1991). Stylistically, his works have rejuvenated literary Arabic without recourse to colloquialisms. His other novels include Midaq Alley (1947, tr. 1975) and Miramar (1967, tr. 1978). Among his short stories are God's World (tr. 1973). His novel Awlad Haratina (1959; tr. Children of Gebelawi, Children of the Alley, 1995), a semibiblical allegory, includes characters identified with Muhammad and Jesus. Considered blasphemous by some, it remains controversial in the Arabic-speaking world and was banned in Egypt. Mahfouz has been an outspoken advocate of peace between Egypt and Israel. In 1994 he was stabbed in an assassination attempt, apparently by an Islamic fundamentalist.

Contact us Until he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988, little was known in the West about the life and literary accomplishments of Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian and the first Arab to receive the award. His writing, examined by Matti Moosa in its original Arabic, thereafter became widely available and widely scrutinized.
Moosa introduces Mahfouz and his principal works to a Western audience by examining his treatment of social, political, and religious themes against the background of twentieth-century Egypt. Often compared to Dickens and Balzac, Mahfouz portrays the condition of the poor and oppressed in a realistic and classically Arabic style.

Naguib Mahfouz: 1988 Nobel Prizewinner
By Lillian L. Schapiro In a slender volume entitled The Day My Leader Was Killed we share the thinking and hopes of three characters: a very pious grandfather, his grandson, who is more concerned with the great love he feels for Randa, a beautiful girl who is bound by the strict codes of behavior which prohibit young people from expressing their romantic attractions. The political and economic terrain during this period is a thread that runs through the story, crashing into a finale with the final assassination of Sadat. This deceptively simple story, which illustrates the essence of Egypt and its people, was richly developed by Mahfouz into his most important work: the three volumes of the Cairo trilogy. Three generations of a Cairo family are the basis of these books, describing their lives from the end of World War I to 1944. In

The Journey of Ibn Fattouma
By Naguib Mahfouz
Fiction/Middle Eastern Studies

Arabian counter epic, The Journey of Ibn Fattouma by Naguib Mahfouz is not set in a definitive time and place. This Nobel Prize-winning author has loosely set his fable in what is described as medieval period Arabia, starting in Cairo at a time when it was the beacon of civilisation in an ignorant world. Qindil Muhammad al-Innabi (called Ibn Fattouma throughout the book) begins a journey in search of worlds different than the Islamic one - which he has lived in all his life, and has become slowly disillusioned with. The hypocrisies, corruption, and betrayal of the true Islam by the Egypt that Fattouma knows, possibly reflect the same Egypt Mahfouz (a practising Muslim) was living in when this book was first published in 1983. Fattouma's journey takes him from place to place in search of the land of Gebel, a legendary paradise that all speak of but have never found. What is known is that it is the ever-elusive Paradise or Nirvana or Shangri-La that everyone, especially Ibn Fattouma, is searching for. Does it exist? Maybe. His trip is one of detours, passing through and living in places like Mashriq, Haira, Halba, Aman and Ghuroub. These lands are fictional parables that illustrate to the reader the diverse (yet ridiculous) systems in which humans organise themselves.

Scribe of the alley
With his 90th birthday this week, Naguib Mahfouz can look back at a career of major achievements, but perhaps not the readership he deserves Richard Woffenden finds out why The tent is going up and the guests from the worlds of literature and film are all set to turn out on 11 December at the American University in Cairo to celebrate the only Nobel laureate for literature in the Arab world. But big party or not, Mahfouz is not likely to turn up. He hasn't been attending big events for a long time. Though his mind and memory are still sharp, Mahfouz is in poor healthalthough it is his shunning the limelight rather than his state of health that keeps him away. Nevertheless, the celebrations are going ahead, for the career of Naguib Mahfouz is truly something to celebrate. No other Egyptian writer has anything like the public profile that Mahfouz has, and this was the case even before the Nobel Prize. His popularity with the masses stems for the most part from the film adaptations of his novels, which are continually re-run on television. Films like Zuqaq Al Midaqq and Bayn Al Qasrayn have become institutions. During his productive period much of his work was syndicated in magazines. What became the collection

Naguib Mahfouz is one of the foremost writers in modern Arabic literature. Born in the al-Jamaliyya district of Cairo, Egypt, on December 11, 1911, he lived there until the age of six . He began his writing career at the age of 17. He was a student of philosophy, graduating from the University of Cairo in 1935. He turned away from a university career, working for many years as a civil servant in the Ministries of Religious Affairs and Culture, which posts afforded him time to pursue his writing. He is an avid reader of many of the European and Russian classic writers, including Balzac, Camus, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Tolstoy and Zola, but above all, Proust. He has written more than 30 novels and many short stories. In 1959, 'Children of Gebelawi' was serialised in the newspaper al-Ahram. The uproar caused by the controversial story meant that it was only many years later that it was brought out in book form. In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He still lives in Cairo with his wife and daughters.
