It was 8 p.m. when Naguib Mahfouz's wife opened the door. At the end of the corridor a short, thin figure approached slowly. The Nobel laureate for literature was standing, smiling and, of course, ready to talk. "I like people coming to see me," said Mahfouz, who rarely goes out these days. An attack in 1994 by Islamic extremists forced him to stay at home where he receives friends who visit him often. The assault changed his life completely. Before, Mahfouz, donning his trademark dark glasses and helped by a stick, would walk every day in the streets of his native Cairo. He would photograph daily scenes that he would later describe in his novels in detail. In 1959, Muslim fundamentalists condemned Mahfouz as a kafir (infidel), prompting the Egyptian government to offer him protection. His "offense," they asserted, was to depict personages from the Bible and the Quran as heroes of a story that takes place in a Cairo alley. Since then, he and his novel "Awlad Al Haritna" (Children of Gebelawi) have been a target. The 86-year-old Mahfouz, however, remains optimistic about his recovery. "I am still under medical treatment. After the accident, [I had] surgery and now I feel better. However, my hand does work yet, it still needs more time. It does not know how to write."

Old Nobel laureate writer holds court

He may be 87 and hard of hearing, but Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz holds court weekly on a floating Nile restaurant, debating events from the coup in Pakistan to the implications of the latest Nobel Prize for chemistry having been awarded to an Egyptian. "I had predicted" Egyptian-American Ahmed Zeweil, the 1999 laureate for chemistry, would one day win the prize, said the novelist, a smile lighting up his gaunt, bespectacled face. "I'm very happy, because it's the Nobel in a scientific discipline, and that means that we in Egypt are keeping up with the times," the 1988 laureate for literature said, surrounded by other writers and intellectuals. In the informal chats held every Tuesday evening aboard the boat, Mahfouz surprises his listeners with his ability to keep abreast of events, according to writer and journalist Ali Shubashi, a regular at the talk-shop. Mahfouz, wearing a button-down shirt and checked jacket, speaks with a firm voice, keeps a steady gaze on his company through thick dark glasses and turns to his interlocuters with his left ear equipped with a hearing aid. He seems to have recovered well from the 1994 stabbing by an Islamic militant, although he still has a security escort - four policemen stand guard at the entrance to the boat, anchored next to a street lined with palm trees.

Table of Contents General Info on Cairo, Egypt Cairo, the capital of Egypt, has been referred to as the Jewel of the Orient, the City of the Thousand Minarets, and the Melting Pot of Ancient and Modern Egyptian Civilizations. Existing as the largest city in the Middle East and Africa, Cairo is at the center of all routes leading to Asia, Africa, and Europe. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta. Here the Nile divides into its two distributaries: Rosetta and Damietta. It is a mixture of new and old.
Egyptian Revolution of 1919 From 1919 until 1922, Egypt was in political turmoil. Nationalists led by Saad Zaghlul renewed demeands for independence. When the British arrested and exiled Zaghlul, discontent against the British turned into revolt. For a few months in 1919, government broke down. Negotiations produced few results. Finally in 1922, Great Britain granted Egypt its independence. But the British kept many pwers, including the right to station troops in Egypt. A new constitution took effect in 1923 that established Egypt as a constitutional monarchy. However, Egypt made little progress toward ridding the country of British forces or improving living standards and economic growth. The monarch struggled with the British and with various political parties for supremacy.

Click the button below: Naguib Mahfouz The Passage of the Century A Film by Francka Mouloudi In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz, "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind," was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first and is still the only Arab Nobel Laureate for Literature. At the end of the 20th Century Mahfouz granted Francka Mouloudi rare access to make this revealing documentary with and about him. At the age of 88, half-blind, hard of hearing, and crippled by a recent assassination attempt, Mahfouz is remarkably lively, witty and lucid.

Rasheed El-Enany, Naguib Mahfouz: The Pursuit of Meaning (New York: Routledge, 1993). Elliott Colla In this study of Naguib Mahfouz's literary corpus, Rasheed El-Enany argues that Mahfouz is the Arab world's most important novelist not simply because of the influence of his novels of the 1950s and 1960s, but also because his later novels, relatively ignored by contemporary critics, have continued to develop the Arabic novel in equally exciting ways. In other words, he asserts that Mahfouz's relevance and standing are not due simply to the works he produced fifty, forty, or even twenty-five years ago, but rather to the fact that the Nobel author has continued to press forward, pulling Arabic literature in his wake. To support this, El-Enany gives an overview of Naguib Mahfouz's oeuvre, from his earliest "historical romances" to his realist, naturalist, and modernist novels. El-Enany then goes on to make the convincing claim that Mahfouz's novels from the 1970s onward represent a return to forms drawn from classical Arabic literature. The strength of this book is that El-Enany has assembled a thoughtful overview of Mahfouz's novels, including within it many books that have usually not been the focus of critical studies. Moreover, he is careful to avoid repeating readings: when El-Enany deals with works that have received considerable critical attention, he defers to previous studies of those works, thus freeing himself to concentrate on Mahfouz's more recent production. The result is that El-Enany manages to sketch a smooth narrative of the career of the Egyptian novelist, one that starts with the early works (of the 1940s), hits its stride with

The Movie: In 1994, Midaq Alley was adapted to screen by Mexican filmmaker Jorge Fons and won a Special Mention at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival. Transferred from 1940s Cairo to contemporary Mexico City, the action revolves around the parallel and often intertwined lives of a bar owner, a spinster, and the local beauty. Naguib Mahfouz
[translated from the Arabic]
Anchor Books 2001 A book review by Danny Yee When Othman Bayyumi is employed as a grade 8 clerk, he is just one of many new employees welcomed by the Director General. But his ambition to attain that lofty position himself is no idle fancy: for him achieving promotion and serving the government become a religious obsession, "the path of glory". So he studies after hours, does extra translation work, cultivates his superiors, saves like a miser, and spurns politics, climbing steadily towards his goal. It is only desire for women which can draw him out, but he denies himself love and marriage until it is almost too late. Respected Sir Hadrat al-Muhtaram , 1975) is an intense psychological study which never leaves its not particularly attractive central subject, but Mahfouz makes it almost into a fairy-tale, told with a light and (even in translation) inimitable prose. It is effortlessly readable, with dramatic episodes covered in short chapters which flow easily one after the other, just like the years of Othman's life, and the result is an absolute gem of a novel. Set around a theatre troupe

His novels are characterized by realistic depictions of social and political life, including social issues dealing with women and political prisoners. Stylistically, his works have rejuvenated the literary Arabic language without recourse to colloquialisms. His Awlad Haratina Children of Gebelawi ), an allegorical satire, includes characters identified with the Prophets and is still controversial in the Arabic-speaking world. In 1988 he became the first Arabic writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
