Canadian Nobel Laureates
This is the time of year when the Nobel Prizes for science are awarded, and while there haven't been any Canadian winners this year, for a small country, Canada has been well represented in the awards in the past few yearsand can lay claim to one of the most important discoveries in medicine earlier this century. And within Canada, Saskatchewan is also well-represented for its size among these prestigious awards. A search of the Nobel Prizes' Web site (www.nobel.se) for the word Canada turns up more than 90 entries. In all, 10 Nobel Laureates are Canadian or are closely identified with Canada; many more studied, grew up or taught here in the course of careers that may have taken them all over the world. Just two years later in 1983, Henry Taube, whom the Nobel committee called "one of the most creative contemporary workers in inorganic chemistry," won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Putatively, it was for "his work on the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions, especially in metal complexes," which sounds rather esoteric, but has practical use in many fieldseven biochemistry, where his discoveries are playing an important role in the study of respiration.. In any event, as one of his nominators pointed out, Taube has made at least 18 major discoveries in chemistry.

History The first known description of diabetes appeared in an ancient Egyptian manuscript, the Ebers papyrus, dated back to 1500 B.C. Around the first century, A.D., Aretaeus, a Greek physician, named this disease A diabetes, which means A siphon. The ancient Greeks meant that the disease involves discharge of excessive amounts of urine. Later, Roman physicians added the Latin word A mellitus, meaning A sweet/honey, to distinguish the disease from diabetes insipidus (Little, 1991). Diabetes mellitus, coded 250 (250.0, 250.1, ... 250.9) in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM, 1992, 1994) and with slight coding changes in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10, 1992), remains the formal nomenclature of the disease today. Ancient physicians suspected that a high concentration of blood sugar is related to this disease. In the absence of effective diagnostic techniques, urine attracting ants, and later, in the early 18th century, urine tasting and blood tasting became diagnostic tests. Unfortunately, no treatment was effective for persons with diabetes at that time (Little, 1991). In 1869, Paul Langerhans of Germany discovered clusters of cells in the pancreas, which later were named the islets of Langerhans in honor of his contribution (Bliss, 1982; Krall et al., 1994). A great experimental breakthrough, linking the pancreas and diabetes, was made by Joseph von Mering and Oskar Minkowski in 1889 (Minkowski, 1989; Pfeifer, 1992). Then, from the 1890s through the early 1920s, many researchers and scientists, including Paulesco of Romania, Georg L Zuelzer of Germany, EL Scott, Israel Kleiner, Frederick M Allen and Elliott P Joslin of America tried to understand how the pancreas controls diabetes and searched for a treatment for diabetes (Bliss, 1982; Krall et al., 1994).

John James
