Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen
Lorenz and Tinbergen were ethologists, who along with Karl von Frisch, received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1973. Lorenz's early interests lay in the use of behavior as an aid to taxonomy. In particular, he was interested in the taxonomy of ducks (Anatidae). In the 1930s he was able to demonstrate phylectic behavioral differences between duck species. Mating behaviors and displays were of particular use in this analysis. Lorenz's most famous contribution is probably his description of imprinting, a learning phenomenon seen a few species. Imprinting involves learning that takes place during a critical period, a tiny window of time. Imprinting can only take place within that critical period. Imprinting, thus defined, is not seen in humans. Attachment, a similar phenomenon, does occur in humans. Both Lorenz and Tinbergen developed intimate relationships with the animals they studied, and that contributed to their success. Tinbergen's research style and personality complemented Lorenz's. Where Lorenz was garrulous and expansive, Tinbergen was reserved and thoughtful. Tinbergen's research skills lay in his ability to "ask questions of nature." His four questions: immediate causation, development, evolution, and function still form the basis for modern ethological theorizing. His research with sticklebacks, herring gulls, and digger wasps are classic examples of ethology.
Comments
Ethology incubated slowly in Europe in the minds of Lorenz, Tinbergen, von Frisch and others. When ethological notions began to percolate across the Atlantic, the effect was predicable. American behavioral psychologists nearly universally rejected ethological ideas and theory. In the ensuing decades, however, the self-correction so often seen in science happened again. Today, ethological notions, refined and revised, form part of any coherent attempt to explain development.

One Question To Success
Humor and knowledge are the two great hopes of our culture.
Historians will have to face the fact that natural selection determined the evolution of cultures in the same manner as it did that of species. Truth in science can be defined as the working hypothesis best suited to open the way to the next better one. It is a good morning exercise for a research scientist to discard a pet hypothesis every day before breakfast. It keeps him young. Barking dogs may occasionally bite, but laughing men hardly ever shoot.

Together, Lorenz and Tinbergen discovered how birds of prey are recognized by other birds. All birds of prey have short necks, and the sight of any bird - or even a dummy bird - with a short neck causes other birds to fly away.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

12 - Choices
How can humankind produce Mother Teresa and Hitler, compassion and cruelty,
humanitarianism and terrorism? How can any human being make the destruction
of others the defining purpose of their life? These are age-old questions
that we are confronted with again and again.
According to one school of thought, war, violence and aggression are an
inevitable outcome of our evolutionary heritage. "Man is a predator," Robert
Ardrey wrote in the book African Genesis, "with an instinct to kill and a
genetic cultural affinity for the weapon."
Ardrey is joined by others in this point of view. There is evidence,
behaviourist Konrad Lorenz said in his book On Aggression, that several of
our early relatives, African Australopithecines and Peking Man, preyed on their own kind. Conceptual thought and speech have proven to be both a blessing and a curse, Lorenz said. Lifting us above all other species, while at the same time creating conflict among ourselves, and giving rise to what he called ‘militant enthusiasm.’ As a species we still respond today with instincts
