Rene Descartes describes the pineal as the control center of the body and mind Antony von Leeuwenhoek describes a nerve fiber in cross section Luigi Galvani publishes his work on electrical stimulation of frog nerves Marc Dax writes a paper on the left hemisphere damage effects on speech Gabriel Gustav Valentin discovers the neuron nucleus and nucleolus Jan Purkinje describes cerebellar cells, large nerve cells with many branching extensions found in the cerebral cortex Robert Remak suggests that nerve cell and nerve fiber are joined Theodor Schwann proposes the cell theory, identifying cells as the fundamental particles of animals and plants Robert Remak provides the first illustration of the 6 layered cortex Augustus Waller describes degenerating nerve fibers Bartolomeo Panizza shows the occipital lobe is essential for vision Camillo Golgi can be considered among the first who sought a link between neuroscience and psychiatry. Eduard Hitzig and Gustav Fritsch discover cortical motor area of dog using electrical stimulation Richard Caton is the first to record electrical activity of the brain Wilhelm His coins the term "dendrite"
Otto Friedrich Carl Dieters differentiates dendrites and axons Wilhelm von Waldeyer coins the term "neuron" Rudolph Albert von Kolliker coins the term "axon".

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent.

Otto Loewi's Dream
Return to Scientific Otto Loewi was awarded a Nobel Prize for his work on chemical transmission in the nervous system. He wrote. "The night before Easter Sunday, I woke, turned on the light and jotted down a few notes on a tiny slip of paper. Then I fell asleep again. It occurred to me at six o'clock in the morning that during the night I had written down something most important, but I was unable to decipher the scrawl. The next night at three o'clock, the idea returned. It was the design of an experiment to determine whether or not the hypothesis of chemical transmission that I had uttered seventeen years ago was correct. I got up immediately went to the laboratory and performed the simple experiment." The experiment worked. This was the key experiment, that led to other experiments that led to a Nobel Prize. So you see your brain is working even when you sleep. Some times it will produce dreams that make sense, other times it will produce ideas and pictures that are hard to decipher. Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Otto Loewi was born in 1873 in Frankfort, Germany. A pharmacologist, he investigated how vital organs respond to chemical and electrical stimulation, and established their dependence on certain proteins for proper function. As a result, he learned how nerve impulses are transmitted by chemical messengers. His findings helped advance medical therapy and earned him the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
