A Letter from Physics Nobel Laureates
To Senators of the 106th Congress: We urge you to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The United States signed and ratified the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963. In the years since, the nation has played a leadership role in actions to reduce nuclear risks, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty extension, the ABM Treaty, STARTs I and II, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations. Fully informed technical studies have concluded that continued nuclear testing is not required to retain confidence in the safety, reliability and performance of nuclear weapons in the United States’ stockpile, provided science and technology programs necessary for stockpile stewardship are maintained. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty is central to future efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons. Ratification of the Treaty will mark an important advance in uniting the world in an effort to contain and reduce the dangers of nuclear arms. It is imperative that the CTBT be ratified.

Car bomb and shooting chip at Afghan stability

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan: Opponents of the Afghan government continued their attacks over the weekend. On Saturday [April 12], a car packed with explosives blew up in eastern Afghanistan, killing the driver and three other people. In the Pakistani border town of Chaman on Sunday [April 13], gunmen fired on the motorcade of the brother of the Kandahar governor, wounding him and killing another relative.
In Kabul, the Afghan capital, a suspected land mine explosion Sunday night blew a crater that was 6 feet in diameter in a street about 2 miles from the center of the city. It caused no injuries and little damage, the Agence France-Presse news agency quoted police officials as saying. More... CINEMA

Prof. Leon M. Lederman (born in U. S. A., 1923)
Prof. Leon M. Lederman was a professor of physics at Columbia University and the Fermi Lab's second director, which is the largest accelerator center in U. S. A. He is now an chaired professor at the University of Chicago. He has served as a science advisor to the President of U. S. A., the first science advisor to the Governor of the State of Illinois, and the chairman of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prof. Lederman won a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1988 for his study of the 'two kinds of neutrino'. He made numerous other significant contributions to the experimental particle physics, including 'the discovery of K¡Æ muon', 'the discovery of anti-deuterium', and 'heavy particle with large momentum', and so forth. He is also well known as a fluent speaker with quick wits, and his lectures are famous for the entertainment as well as scientific depth. Using this talent, he has contributed enormously to the popularization of science by appearing in TV programs such as the Christmas lectures and in the 'Saturday Program' at the University of Chicago for the gifted pre-college students.
Career 1951-1978 Professor, Columbia University, U. S. A.

Schwartz, Melvin
(b. Nov. 2, 1932, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American physicist and entrepreneur who, along with Leon M. Lederman and Jack Steinberger , received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1988 for their research concerning neutrino s (subatomic particles that have no electric charge and virtually no mass). Schwartz studied physics at Columbia University, New York City, and received his Ph.D. there in 1958. He taught at Columbia from 1958 to 1966 and then was a professor of physics at Stanford University from 1966 to 1983. From 1970 he was president of Digital Pathways, Inc., a company that he founded to design computer-security systems.

University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences. Six Laureates are currently members of the faculty: James Heckman (Economic Sciences, 2000), Robert Lucas (Economic Sciences, 1995), Robert Fogel (Economic Sciences, 1993), Gary Becker (Economic Sciences, 1992), Ronald Coase (Economic Sciences, 1991) and James Cronin (Physics, 1980). James Heckman , a Professor in Economics and Public Policy, studies methodologies used to measure the impact of social programs, such as minimum-wage legislation and anti-discrimination law. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on analyzing selective samples. Robert Lucas Robert Fogel , a Professor in the Graduate School of Business, shared the award for applying economics and statistics to the study of history. In his work on slavery in the United States, Fogel has argued that the market would not have ended slavery, as it remained a profitable and efficient system for slave owners.
