Thorvald Stoltenberg, President of the Norwegian Red Cross, presented UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his wife Nane with the "Torstein Dales" memorial prize.
"Poverty and inequality are root causes of conflict and obstacles to peaceful development. The Red Cross Red Crescent struggles for peace every day through our network of millions of volunteers", said Federation President Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro.
"Economic exploitation creates vulnerability. Inequalities in terms of trade, in people's access to labour markets, to health and education, influence their possibility to make a livelihood. The consequences are on the agenda of the International Federation," pointed out Didier Cherpitel in the Nobel Prize Symposium.

1.1 Socio-economic and Humanitarian Evaluation The Union Of Myanmar covers an area of 677,000 square kilometres and has a population of more than 45 million. Though rich in natural resources, forest products, precious stones, petroleum and gas, Myanmar is the poorest country in South-East Asia with a GDP of US$265.3 (ESCAP Sept. 1998) and with an estimated 50% of the largely rural-based population without access to land. Other key social/economic indicators are as follows:
Criteria Figure Reference Year Population ESCAP Growth rate ESCAP Birth rate (per 1000) ESCAP Death rate (per 1000) ESCAP Infant mortality rate (per 1000 live births) ESCAP Life expectancy at birth (male/female) ESCAP Total fertility rate ESCAP Adult literacy rate (male/female) ESCAP Human Development Ranking UNDP (98) % of poor (total) UNDP Population with access to health services ESCAP Population with access to safe water ESCAP Population with access to sanitation ESCAP Administratively, Myanmar is divided into seven States (Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan) and seven Divisions (Ayeyarwady, Bago, Magwe, Mandalay, Sagaing, Thanintharyi and Yangon). Lower administrative units comprise 55 districts, encompassing 320 townships and numerous village tracts, villages and wards. According to the government, there are 135 "national races" in Myanmar, which comprise approximately one-third of the population.

The Nansen Refugee Award Instituted in 1954 by the late High Commissioner for Refugees Dr van Heuven Goedhart, the Nansen Refugee Award is one of the most prestigious awards for those contributing outstanding service to refugees. Intended to draw attention to the plight of refugees and to give new impetus to international assistance, the first award was presented to Eleanor Roosevelt in 1955. The inaugural ceremony took place in the Council Chamber of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, where the prize has been awarded ever since. Appointed as the League of Nations High Commission for Refugees in 1921 Nansen undertook several other major humanitarian missions. These included providing support for the massive flight of Greeks from Asia minor following the war between Greece and Turkey in 1922 and helping over 30 million people at risk of starvation in the USSR. Nansen was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 in recognition of his work. Upon his death in 1930, his work was continued by the Nansen Office, whose work for refugees was also rewarded with a Nobel peace Prize in 1938. Fridtjof Nansen was a fitting inspiration therefore for the creation of a refugee award.

Henry Dunant Red Cross Prophet The force that drew many men and nations together in the Red Cross movement was supplied by Henry Dunant of Geneva, Switzerland. He is often spoken of as the founder of the Red Cross and in one sense of the word he was. He was not, however, an organizer, or a public figure. He was a private citizen who accidentally became acquainted with the human wreckage caused by war. The Battle In 1859 Dunant was traveling in northern Italy. He was a young businessman of 30, and he had only one object in viewto get the support of the Emperor of France for a business project in Algeria. The fact that the emperor was then leading his army against the army of Austria did not deter the enthusiastic young promoter. He did not see the emperor, but he could not escape seeing the casualties left by the Battle of Solferino, where the French victory over the Austrians left 40,000 dead and wounded on the battlefield. On the day of the battle Dunant had arrived in the nearby town of Castiglione. He joined in the work of relief, sent his coach to bring supplies, and wrote to his friends in Switzerland for aid. Then he returned home, never again to be just like the young man who had set out to discuss a business deal with an emperor. Solferino changed Dunant. The Book If Dunant had merely helped the wounded, the world would probably never have heard of him; but he had to go further than that. What he had seen gave his conscience no rest. He resolved to write an appeal against such terrifying inhumanity as he had witnessed, on the chance that he might move people to prevent or reduce the suffering of soldiers. The result was
