In 1927 Landsteiner found that, in addition to antigens A and B, human blood cells contain one or other or both of two heritable antigens, M and N. These are of no importance in transfusions, because human serum does not contain the corresponding antibodies, but they are of value in resolving paternity disputes.
Landsteiner was born and educated in Vienna, and also studied at other universities in Europe. He worked at the Vienna Pathology Laboratory 1898-1908, became professor at a Vienna hospital, and left Austria 1919 for the Netherlands, moving 1922 to the USA and the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York.
His book The Specificity of Serological Reactions 1936 helped establish the science of immunology. He also developed a test for syphilis.

Pubblisfera, San Giovanni in Fiore, Cosenza, 2001).

Summary:
A talk about the discovery of our blood groups and the implications of that discovery.
Transcript:
Robyn Williams: This year we celebrate the centenary of a discovery without which you could well be dead. Or never have been born. There’s a good chance too, that someone near and dear at least wouldn’t be alive. I’m talking about the discovery of blood groups, and from them, the elucidation of immunology in general.
The story is told by Dr Alan Baxter, Head of the Auto Immunity Group at the Centenary Institute in Sydney. His book, just published, is called ‘Germ Warfare’ and then, in case you’re misled and think of Saddam Hussein, it’s called ‘Breakthroughs in Immunology.’ It has a delightful Foreword by our latest Nobel Laureate, Peter Doherty.
Well here’s Alan Baxter.
Alan Baxter: I have, before me, the record ‘At the Drop of Another Hat’, which was produced by George Martin, of Beatles fame. It is the second of three albums of songs and anecdotes by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. Swann wrote the music and Flanders wrote the words. Their greatest hit was ‘The Hippopotamus Song’, an ode to mud, mud, glorious mud. On the record sleeve is a photograph of the pair of them at the Fortune Theatre in London. Swann, seated at the piano, is slight and bespectacled, reminiscent of a parish church organist. Flanders, a huge bear of a man, is hirsute and six foot three, and is seated in a wheelchair behind Swann. Usually they sang together. Occasionally, Swann would sing alone, accompanying himself while Flanders horsed around in his chair, raising laughs with his covert antics. Between the songs, Flanders would provide links, textual detritus, by way of introducing his next composition. His link for their song on the first and second laws of thermodynamics went something like this:

Karl Landsteiner Papers, 1892-(1925-1943)-1984 This collection forms part of the Rockefeller University Archives. The collection includes biographical material, correspondence, subject files and laboratory notes, manuscripts, reprints, and lantern slides. Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) was born in Vienna, Austria, where he began his medical career in 1891 after earning an M.D. from the University of Vienna. A physician and researcher in physiology, he demonstrated the dependence of immunological phenomena on chemical structure. In 1900 his studies on blood resulted in the identification and classification of the human blood groups A, B, AB, and O, and for this work he received the Nobel Prize in 1930. Landsteiner was affiliated with the RIMR from 1922 until his death. Return to Archive Center Home Page Last updated

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
    Premio Nobel
