Klaus von Klitzing
Klaus von Klitzing was born in 1943 in Sroda near Poznan, Poland. He finished Artland-Gymnasium in Quakenbruck. He studied physics at Technical University of Braunschweig. Klitzing received his Ph.D. from University of Würzburg in 1972 for thesis: Galvanomagnetic Properties of Tellurium in Strong Magnetic Fields . In 1978 he finished his habilitation. In 1980-84 he worked as professor at the Technical University, München. Since January 1985 Klaus von Klitzing is Director at the Max-Planck-Institut for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. Klaus von Klitzing discovered precise steps in the behavior of electrons under certain applications in semiconductor electronics, a field of importance in computer science and other present-day technology. The discovery permits more precise measurement of electrical resistance and more accurate testing of theories about electronic movements within atoms. His experiments were performed in a magnetic field up to 20 tesla at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Grenoble, France. This magnetic field is roughly 400,000 times stronger than that of the earth's surface magnetism. He found a solution of the Hall Effect during night on February 4/5, 1980 in Grenoble. The Hall resistance in semiconductors is just the ratio of the electrical current and the voltage at right angles to each other, which happens because the electrons are bent round in circles by the magnetic force. He discovered that this resistance was a fundamental quantum of nature, which could be used to define the atomic fine structure constant, and which would be used to define the international value of the ohm.

(b. June 28, 1943, Schroda [Sroda], German-occupied Poland), German physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1985 for his discovery that under appropriate conditions the resistance offered by an electrical conductor is quantized; that is, it varies by discrete steps rather than smoothly and continuously. Klitzing demonstrated that electrical resistance occurs in very precise units by using the Hall effect. The Hall effect denotes the voltage that develops between the edges of a thin current-carrying ribbon placed between the poles of a strong magnet. The ratio of this voltage to the current is called the Hall resistance. When the magnetic field is very strong and the temperature very low, the Hall resistance varies only in the discrete jumps first observed by Klitzing. The size of those jumps is directly related to the so-called fine-structure constant, which defines the mathematical ratio between the motion of an electron in the innermost orbit around an atomic nucleus to the speed of light. The significance of Klitzing's discovery, made in 1980, was immediately recognized. His experiments enabled other scientists to study the conducting properties of electronic components with extraordinary precision. His work also aided in determining the precise value of the fine structure constant and in establishing convenient standards for the measurement of electrical resistance.

The Science Behind the Nobel Explaining the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Murray Hill, N.J. (Oct. 20, 1998) This year's Nobel Prize in Physics is yet another triumph for quantum mechanics, one of the cornerstones of modern physics. It is also a tribute to research at Bell Labs, says Adjunct Director of Physics Horst Stormer, who shared the most coveted honor in science with two former Bell Labs researchers Daniel Tsui and Robert Laughlin. The work that led to the Nobel was begun at Murray Hill in 1982, when all three physicists were at Bell Labs. Daniel Tsui Stormer currently divides his time between Bell Labs and Columbia University, where he is professor of physics and applied physics. Tsui is now a professor at Princeton University, and Laughlin is a professor at Stanford University. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the institution that decides the winners, awarded the three physicists the prize "for their discovery of a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations" - known to physicists as the fractional quantum Hall effect. The historical roots of the fractional quantum Hall effect go back to the previous century, before the laws of quantum mechanics - the laws that govern the behavior of matter - were known to physicists. In 1879, Edwin Hall, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, discovered that, when a magnetic field was applied perpendicularly to a thin metal sheet that was conducting current, a small electrical voltage appeared that was perpendicular to both the sheet and the magnetic field. The observed voltage is proportional to the strength of the applied field.
