The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

Kellogg, Frank Billings (1856-1937), American Secretary of State, 1925-30. Kellogg began a legal career in 1877, in which he gained a distinction as a corporation lawyer and as a trust-breaking counsel of the US Attorney-General's office. He entered politics in 1916, with election as a Republican Senator. He sat in the Senate for six years, before being appointed ambassador in London by President Coolidge in 1924. Kellogg was recalled one year later to accept the post of Secretary of State. He achieved recognition for the Kellog Pact of August 1928, drafted with the French statesman Briand, and outlawing war as an instrument of national policy as well as providing for the peaceful settlement of disputes. Sixty-two governments ultimately adhered to this pact. Kellogg received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1929 for his contribution to peace. From 1930 to 1935, Kellogg served as a judge at the Permanent Court of Justice in the Hague.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Presentation Each student will make a class presentation on a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Students will give a seven-minute presentation in the first person – that is, as if they are the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. After the seven-minute presentation, your classmates will have an opportunity to ask you more about particular aspects of your presentation and to ask how you (as your Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) would answer questions raised in class. Students will pick their person in class. Student presentations will begin on March 21. The date of the presentation will be determined by lottery, held on March 12. In addition, prior to the class preceding the presentation, students will be required to submit a summary of their presentation in bullet form (less than two pages, double spaced). The summaries will be copied and distributed to all students. Both the presentation and the summary should include the following: 1. Birthplace and date 2. Youth experiences/family life 3. Historical context of nonviolent actions
