Marie Curie biography
Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She was renowned for her work with radioactivity, and it was that work that would eventually end her life. She was born Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland on November 7, 1867. She was the fifth and last child of piano player and teacher Bronsilawa Boguska and mathematics and physics professor, Wladyslaw Sklodowski. Her childhood nickname was Manya. Her father was a freethinker and her mother was a Catholic. bodyOffer(23056) Her family valued education, and so she began her education early. She possessed a remarkable memory. She graduated from secondary school when she was sixteen, receiving a gold medal for her work. Unfortunately her father made some bad investments and she had to go to work at a young age as a teacher, postponing the continuance of her own education. At the age of 18 she became a governess, and put her sister, Bronia, through school with the agreement that Bronia would return the favor- and she did. In 1891 at the age of 24, Sklodowska went to Paris to study mathematics, physics and chemistry at the Sorbonne. She studied fervently, and subsisted almost entirely on bread, butter and tea. During her years there she changed the spelling of her name to the French version, Marie.

Born: May 12, 1910
Died: 1994 Dr. Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin first became interested in crystals and chemistry when she was 10 years old, an interest encouraged by a family friend in Sudan. She went to Oxford and Somerville College, where she attended a course in crystallography and decided to do her research in x-ray crystallography. She spent much of her working life teaching chemistry, tutoring and lecturing and the university level. In 1934 she collected money for x-ray apparatus and continued research on sterols and other biologically interesting molecules, including insulin and penicillin. She also took part in the foundation of the International Union of Crystallography in 1946.

Irene (1897-1956) and Frederic Joliot-Curie (1900-1958), daughter and son-in-law of the Curies, continued the study of radioactivity, producing artificial radioisotopes by alpha bombardment of aluminum and other light nuclei, and also shared a Nobel Prize in chemistry for this work. Frederic continued research on uranium fission and the accompanying production of neutrons. He became the leader of the French atomic energy program. After World War II, he had a deep concern for world peace, becoming the first president of the World Council for Peace.

Marie Curie was born. Nov. 7, 1867, Warsaw, Pol., Russian Empire and died on July 4, 1934, near Sallanches, France nŽe MARIA SKLODOWSKA She was a Polish-born French physicist famous for her work on radioactivity and twice a winner of the Nobel Prize. With Henri Becquerel and her husband, Pierre Curie, she was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics. She was then sole winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. From childhood she was remarkable for her prodigious memory, and at the age of 16 she won a gold medal on completion of her secondary education at the Russian lycŽe. Because her father, a teacher of mathematics and physics, lost his savings through bad investment, she had to take work as a teacher and, at the same time, took part clandestinely in the nationalist "free university," reading in Polish to women workers. At the age of 18 she took a post as governess, where she suffered an unhappy love affair. From her earnings she was able to finance her sister Bronia's medical studies in Paris, on the understanding that Bronia would in turn later help her to get an education. In 1891 Marie Sklodowska went to Paris and began to follow the lectures of Paul Appel, Gabriel Lippmann, and Edmond Bouty at the Sorbonne. There she met physicists who were already well knownJean Perrin, Charles Maurain, and AimŽ Cotton.

1933: A nemrég felfedezett pozitront kezdték vizsgálni. Kutatják a párkeltés jelenségét is. 1934: Az elsõ mesterséges radioaktív izotópot , a 30-as tömegszámú foszfort a Joliot-Curie házaspár állította elõ. Alumíniumot sugároztak be alfa részecskékkel.

Ambos lecionaram no Sorbonne.

Marie Sklodowska Curie (1867-1934) Irene Joliot-Curie (1897-1956) In 1898, Marie Sklodowska Curie and Pierre Curie discovered and isolated two previously unknown radioactive elements, polonium and radium. In 1903 they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Henri Becquerel. After Pierre's death Marie received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. With the advent of World War I, she became director of the Red Cross Radiology Unit, setting up mobile X-ray units for use near the battlefields. Irene Curie, her eldest daughter and a graduate of the School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris, assisted her in the field and later at the Institute of Radium. In 1926 Irene married Frederic Joliot, and together they discovered that radioactive elements can be made from stable elements. In 1935, Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Artist: Lisa B.
