A Proud History that Happened Here By Ann Ferguson On May 19, the dependency building at Riversdale will be opened to the public. Restoration of this outbuilding has been a five-year project and it is exciting to see it near completion. More exciting will be the story told in the dependency as it focuses on the life of Adam Francis Plummer, a remarkable man, who lived as a slave and freeman at Riversdale. Adam Plummer learned to read and write and left a diary that spanned his life from 1841 to his death in 1905. The diary recounts Adam's dedication to his wife and children and his honesty and hard work in making the best possible life for his family. The good example of Adam Plummer's life was repaid by his childrenhis daughter, Nellie, was born in slavery, but became a school teacher and wrote of her admiration for her father in the book Out of the Pastthe Triumph of the Cross . She also wrote about her sister, Sarah Miranda, who founded the St. Paul Baptist Church during a service in the Plummer cabin at Riversdale in 1865. Her twin brother, Robert, became a dentist, and another brother, Henry, was a military chaplain in the mid-west.

Platero y yo / Platero and I > Customer Review #1: The Complete Platero

This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.
Platero y yo / Platero and I > Customer Review #2: The Return to Simplicity This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez. Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults. The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

He died in a Madrid hospital from complications due to his chronic heart and respiratory problems, attending physician Dr. Mariano Malillos, of the Clinica Cemtro, told CNN partner network CNN+. Cela was one of the best-known writers in Spain and Latin America. His works included "The Family of Pascual Duarte," ("La Familia de Pascual Duarte"), a 1942 novel about a man condemned to death, and "The Hive," ("La Colmena"), a 1951 novel portraying decadence and poverty in Spain after the Civil War of 1936-1939. "The Hive" was first published in 1951 in Argentina because it was banned in Spain at the time under the right-wing dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Always Thirsty
Lewis Owen on Nikos Kazantzakis
Page three: Camus and Kazantzakis
[Page one two three Kazantzakis is at one with Camus in his insistence upon a revolt against the guaranteed frustration of all actions. In his epic The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel , the hero Odysseus begins his journey by saturating himself with the excesses of sensual pleasures, as does Don Juan, one of Camus’ examples of an absurdcharacter. However, after the destruction of what Odysseus saw as his ideal city, in Book XV of the epic, he realises the futility of all things before all-conquering death and seeks aesthetic withdrawal on a mountain to commune with his "God". For Camus also, the inevitable outcome of a life imbued with the desire for short-term sensual pleasure is a movement towards asceticism. Camus’ favourite ending of the legend of Don Juan has the hero ending his days in a monastery. Although both Camus and Kazantzakis desire a transcendence of nihilism through the acceptance of their limited fate and the strength issued therefrom, it can be seen that Kazantzakis has more spiritual reasons for embarking upon the "uphill path" of aestheticism. Both Camus and Kazantzakis maintain that one must cry out against futility and frustration. Kazantzakis asserts that, like the light that remains after an exploding star, this cry must remain after the voice no longer exists. Thus, the cry is the catalyst to artistic creativity and only artistic creativity can enable the continued ascent up the path that leads to freedom and hence "saves God" from material imprisonment. In his work, Kazantzakis retained a hope for himself and the future progression of humanity.

University poet laueate Michael Collier and university President C.D.Mote Jr.cut the ribbon commemorating the opening of the Jiminez-Porter Writers 'House in Dorchester Hall. RYAN OWEN -THE DIAMONDBACK Students and faculty invested in the future of a university writing community gathered late yesterday afternoon in Dorchester Hall to inaugurate the JimŽnez-Porter Writers' House, the first university living-and-learning community devoted to the written word. The "house," which comprises 37 students, shares Dorchester Hall with the new Global Communities House and is unlike any other undergraduate literary community because it includes a multilingual focus, said Michael Collier, creative writing professor and university poet laureate. The new living and learning community pledges to promote literature in its international, cross-cultural and multilingual dimensions. All 37 residents speak and write in English, although two speak Spanish as well, said Alvaro Enrigue, an assistant director of the house. The house is named for two 20th century writers closely connected to the university. Juan Ramon JimŽnez was a professor in the Spanish and Portuguese department and a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Katherine Anne Porter is an American fiction writer who left her library, papers and personal artifacts to the university.

(1881-1958) belonged to the group of writers who, in the wake of Spain's loss of her colonies to the United States (1898), staged a literary revival. The leader of this group of modernistas Almas de violeta (Pure Elegies), 1908, La soledad sonora (Sonorous Solitude), 1911, and (Magic Poems of Sorrow), 1911. His early poetry was influenced by German Romanticism and French Symbolism. It is strongly visual and dominated by the colours yellow and green. His later style, decisive, formally ascetic, and dominated by white, emerges in the poetic prose of his delicate Platero y yo (Platero and I), 1914, and is fully developed in (Diary of a Newly-Wed Poet), 1917, written during a trip to the United States, as well as in Eternidades (Eternities), 1918, Piedra y cielo (Stone and Sky), 1919, (Poetry), 1923, and Belleza (Spaniards of Three Worlds), 1942, a book of prose portraits, and several collections of poems, among them Voces de mi copla (Voices of My Song), 1945, and Animal de fondo (Animal of Depth). The latter book, perhaps his best, clearly reveals the religious preoccupations that filled the last years of the poet's life. Selections from most of his works were published in English translation in and Three Hundred Poems
