B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Spanish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. Jiménez made his birthplace Moguer in Southern Spain famous by his series of prose poems of a young writer and his donkey, PLATERO Y YO (1914, Platero and I), one of the classics of modern Spanish literature. Jimémez early poetry was ornamental, romantic, and often filled with dreams of love. During his second period, from 1917, he wrote "naked" poetry, in which the images were reduced to their essence. Cental theme in Jiménez's work was the oneness and beauty of the world.
el nombre exacto de las cosas!
... Que mi palabra sea
la cosa misma,
creada por mi alma nuevamente.
(from Vida nueva , a Madrid review. He became a member of the modernist literary circles and found two literary reviews, Helios (1902) and Renacimiento Helios Rabindranath Tagore , and wrote the popular Platero and I . Platero follows the poet on his trips to town and to country side, its silent company is in contrast to the poets ecstatic linguistic observations. After Platero's death he visits its grave and asks, "do you still remember me?" - it is the donkey who is supposed to remember, not the poet. Vicente Aleixandre Jiménez's poetic output was immense. His better-known works include SONETOS ESPIRITUALES 1914-1915 (1916), PIEDRA Y CIELO (1919), POESÍA, EN VERSO, 1917-1923 (1923), POESÍA EN PROSA Y VERSO (1932), VOCES DE MI COPLA (1945), ANIMAL DE FONDO (1947). LA ESTASIÓN TOTAL (1946), which appeared in Buenos Aires, was ignored in Spain. Jiménez's last book was DIOS DESENDO Y DISEANTE (1949, God Desired and Desiring), a testament and identification with all that is beautiful and creative in nature. As a Platonist, Jiménez believed in a universal consciousness that existed apart from individual consciousness. Colors and music were central for his work. In one poem Jiménez compared music to a "naked woman, running wildly in a clear night."

The Complete Perfectionist: A Poetics of Work
    Nobel Prize Winners (1956)
    Author Info: Juan Ramon Jimenez
(Edited and translated by Christopher Maurer
This is not actually a collection of poems by the Spanish Nobel laureate, it is instead a collection of aphorisms about work and writing and the quest for perfection. Juan Ramon Jimenez, with whom I was previously unfamiliar, was apparently obsessed by the thought that when he was gone all that would be left behind was his body of writings, his "Obra". This realization lead him to adopt a fierce work ethic and to seek perfection in his writing. His intent was not merely to leave a monument to himself but to reinvigorate Spanish writing and indeed to instill a revitalized devotion to work in the Spanish people. Aphorisms are peculiar things. The Western version of Zen koans, they are intended to be brief but profound thoughts. However, their very brevity tends to work against them. Except in unusual cases, they seem alternately over broad or over obvious. In a book like this one, despite Maurer's effort to group them by themes, presenting all of Jimenez's aphorisms in clumps tends to detract from the impact that even the best of them might have had. The natural tendency in reading is to continue on to the next line; this book requires that you fight that inclination, that you instead pause frequently, that you set it aside and come back to it, in order that the ones which do grab your attention can truly be savored.

Literature is a state of culture, poetry is a state of grace, before and after culture. I have a feeling that my boat has struck, down there in the depths, against a great thing. And nothing happens! Nothing ... Silence ... Waves. Nothing happens? Or Has everything Happened and we are standing now, quietly, in the new life? If they give you ruled paper, write the other way. Sharp nostalgia, infinite and terrible, for what I already possess. Homepage Advertising Contact Us FAQ/ Help Juan Ramon Jimenez famous quotes Want to receive a daily FREE!! new Quotation? MIDDLE READERS (Age 9-12)
This bilingual book presents 19 short excerpts from the Nobel laureate's adult classic Platero y Yo, a poetic account of travels in Andalucia. Platero the donkey is the story's star, the village of Moguer its setting. For this edition, the translators selected passages which are evocative of small-town life in Spain in the first half of the 20th century. Antonio Frasconi provided the lively woodcut illustrations. La POESÍA de :
    Juan Ramón Jiménez
    Premio Nobel
