43. The Importance Of Nitric Oxide

Press Release: The 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
NOBELFÖRSAMLINGEN KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
THE NOBEL ASSEMBLY AT THE KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE
12 October 1998 Summary
Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in the organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell, penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signalling in biological systems. The discoverers of NO as a signal molecule are awarded this year´s Nobel Prize. Background Nitric oxide protects the heart, stimulates the brain, kills bacteria etc. It was a sensation that this simple, common air pollutant, which is formed when nitrogen burns, for instance in automobile exhaust fumes, could exert important functions in the organism. It was particularly surprising since NO is totally different from any other known signal molecule and so unstable that it is converted to nitrate and nitrite within 10 seconds. NO was known to be produced in bacteria but this simple molecule was not expected to be important in higher animals such as mammals. Further research results rapidly confirmed that NO is a signal molecule of key importance for the cardiovascular system and it was also found to exert a series of other functions. We know today that NO acts as a signal molecule in the nervous system, as a weapon against infections, as a regulator of blood pressure and as a gate keeper of blood flow to different organs. NO is present in most living creatures and made by many different types of cells.

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998 Park-and-Ride program one step closer to re-starting In two separate resolutions approved by the council, the city pledges to seek local funding for the commuter bus service or provide unspecified in-kind services if funds can't be located. The Santa Fe City Council last summer agreed to give $100,000 to the state Highway and Transportation Department, joining DOE, the Santa Fe County Commission and the Los Alamos County Council, all which had earlier this year agreed to provide an equal amount to the state road agency for the park and ride program. The DOE-Lab funds can be used only for "infrastructure" costs. Infrastructure costs could include purchasing or leasing land for dropoff and pickup lots, buses, salaries of bus drivers and mechanics. It can't be used to subsidize bus fares for employees and subcontract personnel who work at the Lab and ride the bus to work from Española, Pojoaque and Santa Fe, Stover said. All told, the state road agency has $400,000 in local government funds for the park-and-ride program, $500,000 from the highway department and about $2.2 million in federal and private funds and grants for start-up costs. The federal and private grant funds can be used only for capital outlay expenses, such as the purchase of compressed natural gas engines and retrofitting buses to accommodate these engines.

NObel Prize for Heart Research
By Sean Henahan, Access Excellence
Stockholm, SWEDEN (10/12/98)- Three American researchers will receive this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on nitric oxide and the heart. The three researchers are Professor Robert F Furchgott , Department of Pharmacology, State University of New York; Professor Louis J Ignarro Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, UCLA School of Medicine; and Professor Ferid Murad Department of Integrative Biology, Pharmacology and Physiology, University of Texas Medical School at Houston. "The discovery of nitric oxide and its function is one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine," says Valentin Fuster, M.D., Ph.D., president of the American Heart Association. "It has allowed us to improve certain treatments of patients and has given us the basis to explore other mechanisms in the body which may contribute to cardiovascular disease." It consists of cholesterol, inflammatory cells, and fibrosis, and it reduces the space for blood flow in the artery. Click for more graphics.

Published on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 by the New York Times 41 Nobel Laureates Sign Against a War Without International Support by William J. Broad Forty-one American Nobel laureates in science and economics issued a declaration yesterday opposing a preventive war against Iraq without wide international support. The statement, four sentences long, argues that an American attack would ultimately hurt the security and standing of the United States, even if it succeeds. The signers, all men, include a number who at one time or another have advised the federal government or played important roles in national security. Among them are Hans A. Bethe, an architect of the atom bomb; Walter Kohn, a former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon; Norman F. Ramsey, a Manhattan Project scientist who readied the Hiroshima bomb and later advised NATO; and Charles H. Townes, former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon and chairman of a federal panel that studied how to base the MX missile and its nuclear warheads. In addition to winning Nobel prizes, 18 of the signers have received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor.

Three Americans Win Nobel Prize for Work With Blood Signaling
Los Angeles Times
Three Americans were awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discovery that nitric oxide - a common gas better known as an air pollutant - transmits signals within the human body. That discovery led to the development of the anti-impotence drug Viagra, to a new treatment for newborns with dangerously high blood pressure in their lungs and to drugs for the treatment of shock. It is also expected to stimulate the development of new drugs for heart disease and perhaps even cancer. Louis J. Ignarro, 57, a pharmacologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, will share the $955,500 prize with Robert F. Furchgott, 82, of the State University of New York in Brooklyn and Dr. Ferid Murad, 62, of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. "The discovery of nitric oxide and its function is one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine," said Dr. Valentin Fuster, president of the American Heart Association. "It has allowed us to improve the treatment of certain patients" and will likely lead to the discovery of new ways to treat high blood pressure and heart attacks, he added. Ignarro received the news in Naples, Italy, while traveling. UCLA colleague Dr. Robin Eisner told him he had received the prize, and Ignarro asked if the call was a prank.
