John Hume, Leading Figure in Northern Ireland Peace Process, speaks at Mount Holyoke
South Hadley, MA John Hume, a leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) of Northern Ireland and a major figure in the current progress for peace, delivered an address on the peace process in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, March 14, 1995. The text of Mr. Hume's remarks and other infornation relevant to his talk are available in a special online edition of the College Street Journal. Mr Hume, who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to non-violent activism for social and economic justice in one of the most troubled regions in the world, spoke at 7:30 pm at Chapin Auditorium in Mary Woolley Hall at Mount Holyoke College. Mr. Hume had been invited to the area and to the College by United States Congressman Richard E. Neal (D-Springfield). According to Congressman Neal, who has been a leader in the United States in calling on the British government to take bold action to resolve economic, social and political tensions in Northern Ireland, "John Hume's lifelong work on behalf of peace has been a major factor in the current cease-fire and the current discussions of a new model for political accords in the North. It is safe to day that without his work, we would not be in the unprecedented position of hope and promise that we are today." In recent weeks, the British and Irish governments issued a joint approach on moving forward talks on the future of Northern Ireland, talks which could bring Irish and Protestant leaders in the North into the most comprehensive negotiations in 25 years. At least 3,200 people have been killed since 1969 as the result of conflict between the Irish Republican Army and Protestant paramilitary forces. That conflict ended, at least for the present time, last year in a historic cease fire.

Staff Writer HAVERHILL Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume, who brokered the Good Friday Peace Accord that diffused tensions in Northern Ireland, will be the guest of honor at Congressman Martin T. Meehan's St. Patrick's Day luncheon March 15. Hume won the prize in 1998 for creating a power-sharing government between Irish and British political factions in Northern Ireland. The deal also freed more than 400 political prisoners and laid the groundwork for the 2000 disarming of paramilitary groups like the Irish Republican Army and their opposition, the Royal Ulster Constabulary. "The opportunity is to hear John Hume who's dedicated his life to building a climate where the parties on both sides of the troubles in Ireland can come together," said Meehan, D-Lowell. The St. Patrick's Day party will also be highlighted by Irish song and humor, which will be dished up along with corned beef and cabbage at DiBurro's. Meehan will also honor his choice for Irish Person of the Year.

Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume honoured Hull by giving a moving lecture on his vision for peace in Northern Ireland.
He spelled out his hopes and fears to an appreciative audience who could not fail to be impressed by his sincerity. Reporter Mark Naylor was there for the historic visit.
NOBEL Prize winner John Hume made history by becoming the greatest Irish nationalist leader to visit Hull since the legendary Daniel OConnell. And his visit brought echoes of the crucial role the city played in helping to raise much-needed cash to help the Irish potato famine disaster.
SDLP leader Mr Hume was at the Guildhall to deliver the first in a series of lectures by Nobel prize winners to mark the Hull700 celebrations. He wished the city well as it reaches the historic milestone and his visit attracted a distinguished audience including city MPs John Prescott, Kevin McNamara and Alan Johnson. Also present were Euro MP Peter Crampton, new Bishop of Hull the Rt Rev Richard Frith, and Canon John Waller, of Holy Trinity Church.
Historic Moment:

Hume received the Noble Peace Prize in 1998 for dedicating his political career to the creation of peace in Northern Ireland by applying his philosophy of non-violence. His peaceful negotiations have brought an end to the secular violence that has terrorized Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland for more than 30 years.
At the age of 66, Mr. Hume has somewhat stepped out of the political spotlight and is concentrating on spreading his beliefs of non-aggressive peace negotiations throughout the world. He has also been honored with other notable awards, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Peace Prize in 1999 and the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2002.

Mr. Pichardo Pagaza President of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), Ambassador from Mexico to the Netherlands Introduction (back) Distinguished guests, it is a great honour and pleasure for the International Institute of Administrative Sciences to have here before us today the honourable John Hume. We also have with us a high profile group of very distinguished members of our Institute who are looking forward to getting to know, even if briefly, the basic ideas of the distinguished, honourable John Hume and also perhaps to address some comments. For a life devoted to promoting peace and reconciliation among his fellow countrymen in Northern Ireland, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 which he shared with David Trimble. A part of Mr. John Hume’s basic philosophy could rightly be inscribed as our own at IIAS, at our Institute. For instance, when he mentions that " difference is not a threat, difference is natural, difference is of the essence of humanity; the answer to difference is to respect it ". Or when he says that we should " create institutions which respect diversity, that ensure that we work together in our common interest ". He believes, and I am also quoting " the only change that really matters: in the human heart ". Those are very wise words valued in all walks of life.

N. Irishmen get Nobel Prize "Mr John Hume has throughout been the clearest and most consistent of northern Ireland’s political leaders in his work for a peaceful solution,’’ the committee said in its citation. "As the leader of the traditionally predominant party in northern Ireland, Mr David Trimble showed great political courage when, at a critical stage in the process, he advocated solutions which led to the peace agreement,’’ the citation said. The committee also noted that the peace agreement that was signed in April was the work of other northern Ireland political leaders, as well as the governments of the United Kingdom, The USA and Ireland. The prize of 7.6 million Swedish kronor (963,000 dollars) will be divided equally between Mr Hume (61) and Mr Trimble (54). Mr Hume, contacted by Norwegian television NRK, said he believed the prize "will strengthen our peace process enormously.’’

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

You are here: [an error occurred while processing this directive] CHRONOLOGY/TOP NEWS STORIES: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE by Local Ireland Almanac Nobel Peace Prize Date: 10th December, 1998 It was acknowledged that the award was more of an incentive to push the peace process forward. To this end, it has partially failed. While the consensus was that John Hume totally deserved the prize, David Trimble's nomination was viewed as a carrot and stick approach to compel Unionist commitment to the process. Others, including no less a figure than President Bill Clinton, pointed out that there was a third person missing - Gerry Adams who, at considerable risk to himself and his party, participated fully in negotiations with John Hume from the very beginning. Nonetheless, Ireland celebrated with both leaders in winning such a prestigious award. John Hume became the second person from Derry (the first being Seamus Heaney) to win the Nobel Prize. The text of his speech is given later in this publication.
