I would like to begin by expressing my deep appreciation and gratitude to the Nobel committee for bestowing this honour on me today. I am sure that they share with me the knowledge that, most profoundly of all, we owe this peace to the ordinary people of Ireland, particularly those of the North who have lived and suffered the reality of our conflict. I think that David Trimble would agree with me that this Nobel prize for peace which names us both is in the deepest sense a powerful recognition from the wider world of the tremendous qualities of compassion and humanity of all the people we represent between us. In the past 30 years of our conflict there have been many moments of deep depression and outright horror. Many people wondered whether the words of W.B Yeats might come true

Nobel Peace Laureate John Hume Delivers Inaugural
Ireland-United States Lecture Series at Georgetown
John Hume, who along with Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, delivered the inaugural Ireland-United States Lecture at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service last night. "Respect for diversity and respect for difference is the fundamental principle of peace," said Hume, advocating the development of political institutions to respect differences and to bring people together in pursuit of common economic interests. Calling Americans "great and true friends of our peace process," Hume said, "the support of the United States is vital to our effort to leave our conflict behind us." Mr. Hume has dedicated his political career to the creation of a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. A longtime leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), Mr. Hume was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble in 1998. John Hume began talks with Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams with the stated objective of bringing an end to violence followed by the All Party Talks leading to the Good Friday Agreement. He was a leader of the non-violent Civil Rights Movement in 1968 to 1969 and was first elected to Westminster in 1983. As a Member of the European Parliament since 1979, he sits on the Front Bench of the Socialist Group, the largest Group in the European Parliament.

Release: April 25, 2000 1998 Nobel Prize winner John Hume at UI for talk April 28 IOWA CITY, Iowa John Hume, co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, will present a public lecture at the University of Iowa at 4 p.m., Friday, April 28 at Macbride Hall Auditorium. Hume helped broker a peace agreement between Northern Ireland's Protestants and Catholics in April 1998, which has since led to a first-ever multi-party British and Irish government. Hume's talk, "The Struggle for Peace in Northern Ireland," is a part of the UI College of Law's continuing series of Richard S. Levitt Distinguished Lectures. Hume is to be introduced at the free and public talk by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, (D-Ia.), a longtime friend of Hume, and also an instrumental figure in arranging his visit to Iowa City. Hume was scheduled to present this Levitt Lecture in spring 1998 as part of the then year-long human rights awareness program Global Focus: Human Rights '98. Hume's visit was cancelled, when he was summoned to return to Northern Ireland to help resolve a crisis in implementing the Good Friday Peace Agreement, the 1998 peace accord he helped negotiate. Hume shared the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize award with David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionists since 1995, who was also a major architect of their country's peace process. Hume has led Northern Ireland's main Catholic party, the Social Democratic and Labor Party since 1979. He has been an outspoken champion of non-violent solutions to the vexing political, social, and religious issues that have divided Northern Ireland for a number of decades.

Release: Feb. 17, 2000 Nobel Laureate John Hume scheduled to visit UI in April IOWA CITY, Iowa John Hume, a 1998 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who shared the award with David Trimble for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, is scheduled to give a public address Friday, April 28 at Macbride Auditorium at the University of Iowa. Burns Weston, emeritus professor, UI College of Law, and director, UI Center for Human Rights, says Hume's visit is a result of the successful "Global Focus: Human Rights '98," a yearlong conscience-raising human rights issues program that in 1998 commemorated the 50th anniversary of the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. Hume's visit is made possible by the College of Law's Richard S. Levitt Distinguished Lectureship fund and International Programs, in cooperation with the UI Center for Human Rights. Weston said the unpredictable events that continue to shape the Northern Ireland peace process may again change Hume's visit date. Hume was to visit in April 1998 as an HR '98 speaker, but was forced to cancel after a breakdown in talks between the fractious Protestant and Catholic groups that had some months prior agreed to a peace accord.

SDLP president John Hume has been one of the driving forces behind many of the significant attempts to resolve the Northern Ireland problem over the past 30 years. He has been widely credited with bringing unionists and republicans together to make the peace process possible. A former teacher, Mr Hume first came to prominence through the civil rights movement in the late 1960s, when Catholics demanded substantial changes to the way Northern Ireland was run. He helped to found the moderate nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1970, taking over as leader in 1979. He became a Member of the European Parliament in the same year. Mr Hume was a member of the power-sharing executive set up after the Sunningdale Agreement in December 1973 and helped to shape the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985, which for the first time gave Dublin a limited involvement in the affairs of Northern Ireland.

Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume has tried to calm unionist anger in Northern Ireland over the award.
BBC Ireland Correspondent Mark Devenport reports on reaction to the award
World leaders rushed to congratulate republican SDLP leader Mr Hume and his co-winner, the province's First Minister, Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble. But the radical Democratic Unionist Party called the award a "farce". Leader Ian Paisley said that without paramilitary arms decommissioning, the award was based on a "phoney peace". John Hume: Agreement means respect for unionists and republicans Mr Hume argued that the Nobel prize would bring the unionist and republican communities of Northern Ireland together. He said: "I hope that now they see the very substantial international goodwill and recognition of their own community, that will strengthen the support for the (Good Friday) Agreement and for implementing the Agreement. "This is because quite central to this whole Agreement is respect for the identity of both sections of our community.
