In 1993, Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse of Princeton University shared the Nobel Prize in physics for their 1974 discovery of the first binary pulsar. Taylor, a former Brookhaven summer student, was elected in 1987 to the Board of Trustees of Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), which managed Brookhaven for the U.S. Department of Energy from 1947 to 1997. The 1989 Nobel in physics was shared by Norman Ramsey, one of AUI's founders and the first chairman of Brookhaven's Physics Department. Ramsey's prize was awarded for his invention of the separated oscillatory fields method for precisely measuring movements within an atom, an advance that provided the basis for the world time standard-keeping cesium atomic clock. A Brookhaven summer student from 1957, Roald Hoffmann, went on to share the 1981 Nobel in chemistry for his theoretical work in the behavior of atoms and molecules. SCIENCE ON SATURDAY BEGINS ITS SECOND SEASON LIVERMORE, Calif. - Class is back in session at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Feb. 7 with the return of the popular "Science on Saturday" lecture series for middle and high school students. Leading off the free nine-week series is a presentation by computer graphics experts from Industrial Light and Magic on "The Digital Creature Feature: Putting It All Together." This is the second year the Lab has presented "Science on Saturday." In its inaugural year, the free lecture series attracted standing-room-only crowds every Saturday for six weeks. This year, the free lectures will be offered every Saturday, Feb. 7 through April 4, from 9:30-11:15 a.m. in the Lab's Bldg. 123 auditorium. The talks are geared to middle and high schools students, their guardians and teachers. Adults who want to attend any of the lectures will have to be in the company of a student. "All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis," said Dolores Doyle of the Lab's Education Program, "but kids have first priority. We want to expose kids to scientists and the latest scientific research that's being done both at the Lab and outside."

2000 - Zhores I. These lectures were established in 1981 and are funded by an endowment provided by one of our alumni, Professor Ferdinand G. Brickwedde (B.A. '22, M.A. '24, Ph.D. '25), and his wife, Langhorne Howard Brickwedde. Professor Brickwedde has had a distinguished research and academic career. He was a co-discoverer of deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen. He was long associated with the National Bureau of Standards and was dean of the College of Chemistry and Physics at Pennsylvania State University from 1956 to 1963. Each academic year, at least one outstanding individual is invited for a three-day period. During this time, the visitor delivers a public address and the weekly departmental colloquium, the latter being geared to the scientific community. At other times, visitors are invited for shorter or longer periods to give a colloquium, teach and/or conduct specialized seminars. As stipulated by the Brickweddes, the visitors are asked to spend generous amounts of time with students. Informal discussions and social activities are arranged so that all students have the opportunity to have close contact with our guests. The list of Brickwedde lecturers, with the year of their visit, is given below: E.M. Purcell, Harvard Univ. (1981), Nobel laureate in physics, 1952.
