Binary Pulsar: The 1993 Nobel Prize Awarded to Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor Tom Robbins Physics Department Monmouth College In 1993, the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded jointly to Russell A. Hulse and Joseph H. Taylor, Jr, both of Princeton University, for the discovery of a new type of pulsar, which has opened up new possibilities for the study of gravitation. They discovered this new type of pulsar in 1974 using the 300-m radiotelescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, West Indies. A binary pulsar is a pulsar with two heavy bodies orbiting each other. The significance of this discovery is that the behavior of these two bodies deviates greatly from what classical Newtonian mechanics predicts. The behavior of this system has been studied closely and used to verify Einstein’s general theory of relativity. So far the predicted and actual observations vary by only 10^-3. This system has also been used to study gravitational waves.

AN ACTIVE GALAXY'S CENTER AND ITS NUCLEUS do not always coincide. E. Mediavilla and S. Arribas, astronomers working in the Canary Islands, report that two-dimensional spectra of the Seyfert galaxy NGC3227 reveal the galaxy's nucleus-identified in the spectral map as being that area with intense broad emission lines, indicative of high-velocity gas moving under the presumed influence of a supermassive black hole-is offset from the galactic center by about 750 light years. The astronomers offer several explanations: the displacement may have resulted from the merger of two galaxies or the black hole, if one is there at all, may be orbiting some concentration of dark matter. (Nature, 30 Sept. 1993.) astronomy PROTON HALOES have been observed around several nuclei. Analogous to the neutron haloes around nuclei such as lithium-11 (

ISEF 2000
DETROIT(BUSINESS WIRE)May 9, 2000High school students participating in this year's International Science and Engineering Fair 2000, May 7-12 in Detroit, will have a chance to meet with a global panel of scientific "superstars."
Five Nobel Laureates, two Charles Stark Draper Prize winners, and one Enrico Fermi Award recipient will be visiting the 51st annual science fair at the Cobo Convention Center and participating in a question-and-answer panel discussion with the student finalists on Tuesday, May 9, 12-2 p.m.
"It will be a lively panel discussion," said Tzeitel Hirni, Science Service marketing manager. "The biggest thing that the Nobel Laureates and other award-winning scientists want to do during the visit to ISEF is meet with the students themselves. They don't want to be VIPs. They want to talk with the students."
The Science Service, which is based in Washington, D.C., has been coordinating the annual International Science and Engineering Fair since the first ISEF in 1950. The Science Service is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of science among people of all ages through publications and educational programs.
The International Science and Engineering Fair is held in a different city each year. Detroit's plans to hold the first ISEF of the 21st century were laid back in 1987. The event will draw thousands of students, judges, volunteers, chaperones and translators to Detroit's downtown and is estimated to generate $8 million for the Southeastern Michigan economy.

This pulsar was among those found in a search for pulsars made at 430 MHz with the Arecibo telescope as part of Hulse's Ph.D. research. PSR B1913+16 was first detected on July 2nd, 1974, and the discovery was reported in a letter to the Astrophysical Journal in January 1975 ( Ap. J. The large orbital velocities in this system, the high eccentricity, and strong gravitational fields provide a laboratory for the study of relativistic physics. In particular, the precise measurement of pulse arrival times, which has continued at Arecibo over the years, have led to the conclusion that the observed decrease in orbital kinetic energy is in quantitative accord with the rate expected from damping by gravitational radiation as predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity. These results were published in February 1979 ( Nature , 437). This was, and continues to be, the only experimental evidence for the production of gravitational radiation, fittingly coming at the centenary of Einstein's birth. C. Salter

- Our alma mater's mission is "To provide educational and social opportunities that are unique for gifted and talented students so as to prepare them for meaningful and useful roles in science and society." Our Web Site The Alumni Association of The Bronx High School of Science has thousands of members. Graduates are often more proud of having graduated from Bronx Science than from some of the most prestigious colleges and universities. Friendships formed at Bronx Science, often, last a lifetime. Our alumni go on to become leaders in not only science, mathematics, and technology but business, the humanities, and the arts. Just a glance at the list of alumni makes it apparent that the Bronx High School of Science provides students with the preparation necessary to be successful in college and beyond. Distinguished alumni include 5 Nobel Laureates, more than any other high school in the world and more than many countries.
