62. Letter - M. Cohen & A. Pearce (September/October 1999)
be interested to know that Dr. charles brenton huggins, BA graduate and former Chancellorof Acadia University, was awarded the 1966 nobel Prize in Medicine.
http://www.cap.ca/pic/archives/55.5(1999)/vijh-999.htm
"Article on Canadian Heritage of Nobel Prizes by A.K. Vijh - July/Aug. 1999 issue of PiC" (July/August 1999 PiC)
... I was surprised to see, in Table 2 ("Nobelists with Canadian roots and connections"), that Ernest Rutherford (Chemistry, 1908) "Did part of his Nobel-winning work in Montreal". A more accurate statement would be "Did most of his Nobel-winning work in Montreal". Of Rutherford's 77 papers leading to his Nobel award, 7 (approx. 140 pages) were written in New Zealand or the U.K., while 70 (approximately 760 pages) were written in Canada. Indeed, if we take account of the subject matter of the papers on which the Nobel Award was based, it would almost be true to state that Rutherford did all of his Nobel-winning work in Montreal. The other surprising aspect of Rutherford's award was the fact that Rutherford, the physicist, received his prize in Chemistry. Rutherford himself was amused by this apparent anomaly. However, as the subsequent history of science has shown, Rutherford's Nobel work on radioactivity laid the foundation of his later work on the structure of the atom, which in turn provided an essential building block of modern chemistry. Montague Cohen, Prof. of Physics; Curator, Rutherford Museum

Nobel Prize Winners
Resources Links About Please note that the list is far from being complete. Canadians are recognised world-wide for their contributions in the fields of medicine, science, peace keeping and many other arenas.
Dr. Fredrick Banting
Medicine Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1923 for his discovery of Insulin, a substance he discovered while performing scientific experiments. Insulin is still an important part of the lives of diabetics today and has been credited with extending the lives of many diabetics and preventing blindness and other complications of the disease. Not only did Dr. Banting provide the world with Insulin, he was awarded the Military Cross for heroism under fire, during his tour of duty in World War I. Banting continued to be involved with the military during World War II and died resulting from a plane crash over Canadian soil. Charles Best
Partner of Banting Co-discoverer of Insulin, Banting's partner in research was not provided any recognition by the Nobel Laureates Prize award and Banting split his portion of the prize with Best. Best would continue to make strides in medical research and was awarded C.B.E. in 1944 for his work in developing a process for drying and storing blood serum for use in the military. His research has also been associated with the following drugs: histamine, heparin and choline. He was presented the Flavelle Medal in 1950, and was the first winner of the Pan American Prize
