The Importance of Discovery: An Interview with Dr. Shutsung Liao
By Miriam Kritzer Van Zant
Department of Plant Biology, M/C 6509
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901-6509
Dr. Shutsung Liao is the director of the new Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research at the University of Chicago (UC). (For more on the Tang Center see EBL Spring/Summer 2000: http://www.siu.edu/~ebl/tang.htm ) The Tang Center is independent of all other groups within the university. It is housed in the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research at UC Medical Center. Dr. Liao is also a member of the Ben May Institute, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in the Committee on Cancer Biology at UC. Dr. Liao's insights into biochemistry and natural products chemistry include comments on the mechanism of action of hormones, therapy for prostrate cancer and other hormonal problems, many associated with aging, and the similarity to hormonal action of gamma-Linoleic acid (GLA) from evening primrose oil, and of (-) Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), from green tea. This interview with Dr. Liao showcases his genuine humility, as well as his thoughts on research, discovery, and his devotion to his former mentor, Charles Huggins, MD. Dr. Huggins, a urologist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1966 for his work on prostrate and breast cancer. Huggins founded the Ben May Laboratory, which was the forerunner of the Institute, and the place where Dr. Liao did his graduate research. Dr. Huggins stressed creativity, and said that science is the art of the 20th century. Dr. Liao also believes in the importance of creativity in research. He needed little prompting, so the interview follows his choice of topics. He spoke with EBL on May 30, 2000. We hope you get the same pleasure reading this that we experienced in talking with Dr. Liao.

Peyton Rous Papers
(59.5 linear feet) Call no.: B R77 American Philosophical Society Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract For his pioneering research on the link between viruses and cancer, the pathologist Francis Peyton Rous was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1966. Working primarily at the mainly at the Rockefeller Institute after 1909, Rous first came to notice for his theoretical construction of the first blood bank for use in France during World War I, a plan ultimately implemented by his assistant, Oswald H. Robertson. Subsequently, he left an important imprint on the development of experimental medicine, partly through his own research on the origins of cancer and his administrative activities at the Rockefeller, but also as editor of the Journal of Experimental Medicine from 1921-1970. The Rous Papers include correspondence, lectures, articles, reports, laboratory records, reprints, and photographs that document all aspects of the life and work of Peyton Rous. Reflecting his work at the Institute are letters of colleagues, information on assistants, and reports to the directors (1909-1959). Additional material relates to Rous' diverse organizational interests, including the American Cancer Society, Century Association, Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research (at Yale University), Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, Johns Hopkins University, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, New York Academy of Medicine, Royal Society of Medicine Foundation, and Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research.

Born 12 Jan 1916
American chemist who was a pioneer in the development of wash- and- wear fabrics. Earlier, she investigated fat emulsions and transport of fat in animals. For the Office of the Surgeon General, she developed an intravenous fat emulsion for intravenous feeding to help supply necessary calories for long term patients. Benerito also investigated the reaction epoxies. Her findings have been used not only in the textile industry bur also to paper, film, and epoxy plastic manufacturers, and they have been applied in the use of epoxy compounds to preserve wood. Benerito has been granted over 50 patents. Her research has resulted in the development of cotton fabrics that are crease and stain resistant, comfortable, and "drip-dry" and better able to retard flames. Sergey Pavlovich Korolev

Born 12 Jan 1907; died 14 Jan 1966.
Soviet designer of guided missiles, rockets, and spacecraft. He was one of the founders of Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion. In 1933, he participated in the Soviet Union's first launch of a liquid-propellant rocket. Because he was not a member of the Communist Party, he spent much of his life under house arrest. After demonstrating his expertise in the modification of captured V2 rockets, Korolev directed the design, testing, construction, and launching of the Vostok spacecraft, and most of the U.S.S.R.'s other projects. Around 1958, Korolev argued for the pursuit of manned space flight instead of military reconnaissance satellites. After much debate, the Vostok project was approved provided the launch vehicle could also be useful to the military.

SEPTEMBER 22 - BIRTHS Chen Ning Yang
(source)
Born 22 Sep 1922
Chinese-born American theoretical physicist who collaborated with Tsung-Dao Lee and in 1956 made a fundamental theoretical breakthrough in predicting that the law of conservation of parity would break down in the so-called weak interactions when certain elementary particles decay. Parity refers to the symmetry between physical phenomena occurring in right- and left-handed coordinate systems. Chien-Shiung Wu confirmed this experimentally by observations of beta decay. Yang and Lee were awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1957. In collaboration with R. L. Mills, Yang proposed a non-Abelian gauge theory - also known as the Yang-Mills theory - a mathematical principle describing fundamental interactions for elementary particles and fields.

Born 22 Sep 1905; died 10 Feb 1964.
German rocket propulsion engineer whose projected "antipodal bomber," with a range far greater than that made possible by its fuel capacity alone, greatly interested the major Western governments and the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. In 1932 he started to establish a test-bed for rocket engines at the University of Technology Vienna, where he worked as an assistant researcher and developed and experimented on different designs of combustion chambers.
