February 14 through May 30, 1999 This historic exhibition brought to a U.S. museum for the first time original watercolors by novelist Hermann Hesse, as well as pen-and-ink drawings. The exhibition also included Hesse's brushes, pencils, palette and paint box, a color facsimile of his 1946 Nobel Prize award in Literature, first edition books of Hesse's works, reproductions of letters by Hesse with translations (including correspondence with Carl Jung), photographs of Hesse writing and painting with Thomas Mann, and other personal artifacts. Hermann Hesse turned to painting in his early 40's at a time of emotional stress. Settling in the village of Montagnola in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland, Hesse was captivated by the landscape. His watercolors reveal an Expressionist fervor, a Fauvist palette, and a style that often touched base with Cubism.

Hermann Hesse
Hermann Hess was born in Calw, Germany at the edge of the Black Forest on July 2, 1877. He grew up in a missionary household where it was assumed that he would enter the ministry. As a child, Hesse was extremely rebellious. Because of behavior problems, he was constantly moving from one school to another. His parents even considered sending him away. Despite Hesse's difficulties at home, he was always at the top of his class without putting much effort into his school work. From the age of twelve, Hesse aspired to be a poet. He was enrolled at the Maulbronn Seminary In 1895, Hesse began his apprenticeship as a bookseller at the Hechenhauer Bookshop in Tubingen. He educated himself by reading while working as a bookseller and antiquarian in Basel. Bookseller apprenticeship was typical of most aspiring German authors of the time. During his apprenticeship, Hermann Hesse published several poems (

Posted by Albertus Secundus on January 09, 19101 at 09:42:17: hi there I like your homepage and ... would like to invite you to my HERMANN HESSE PAGE; THE HOME PAGE OF THE CASTALIAN PROVINCE ... according to Hermann Hesse's great work The Glass Bead Game of which he worked for twelve long years and received the Nobel Prize... Hesse describes in the Glass Bead Game a intellectual elite maintained by the State and which provides the country with teachers as the Board of Educators and thus resembles the Vedic concept of the Brahmanas a great deal. This is especially true when one considers that their lives include, besides the daily Vita activa and the daily Vita contemplativa, the daily practice of meditation, as described beautifully by Hermann Hesse. It is interesting to see how Hermann Hesse disguises his ideal state with the Glass Bead Game and yet points to it every now and then in the course of the book, more so to the necessity of an intellectual elite, such as that of the Castalians, exercising its influence on the political fate of the country. y.s. Hesse, Hermann 1877-1962, German novelist and poet. A pacifist, he went to Switzerland at the outbreak of World War I and became (1923) a Swiss citizen. The spiritual loneliness of the artist and his estrangement from the modern world are recurring themes in Hesse's works. His novels, increasingly psychoanalytic and symbolic, include Peter Camenzind (1904, tr. 1961), Unterm Rad (1905, tr. The Prodigy, Rosshalde (1914), and Demian (1919, tr. 1923). One of his most famous and most complex novels, Steppenwolf (1927, tr. 1929), treats the dual nature of man; this theme is pursued in Narziss und Goldmund (1930, tr. Death and the Lover, 1932). Among other works are Das Glasperlenspiel (1943, tr. Magister Ludi, 1949) and Siddhartha (1922, tr. 1951), a novella reflecting Hesse's interest in Asian mysticism. The gentle, lyric quality of Hesse's prose is shared by the wistful, lamenting verse of his Gedichte (1922) and Trost der Nacht (1929). He was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature.
