Nobel Laureates
Eight Scientific Researchers Who Discovered... Guessing the number of Canadians who have won the Nobel Prize for scientific discoveries might well be a question for the TV game show Jeopardy, but the answer would be open to debate, for at least three of the eight recipients were born in other countries and four of the five native-born winners were recognized for research accomplished in the United States. Six scientists have won outright or jointly won, a Nobel Prize for chemistry and two have won for physics. Three of the chemistry winners were born elsewhere: Gerhard Herzberg, born in Germany, left in 1935 because his wife was Jewish; John Polanyi, a University of Toronto professor, was also born in Germany; and Michael Smith, now at the University of British Columbia, is a native of Blackpool, England. The first Canadian-born chemist to with the Nobel Prize was Henry Taube, from the mixed-farming community of Neudorf, Saskatchewan, for studies accomplished at three American universities. The other two, natives of Montreal, were Rudolph Marcus and Sidney Altman. Two Alberta-born scientists have won the Nobel Prize for physics: Bertram Brockhouse in 1994 for discoveries made 40 years earlier at Chalk River, Ontario, and Richard Taylor for researching subatomic particles called "quarks." He was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize with two Americans in 1990.

Gerhard Herzberg: An Illustrious Life in Science
By Boris Stoicheff McGill-Queen's University Press, 468 pages, $49.95 He works, gets sehr guts in his studies and spends time in England, and seems ready to join the ranks of what was one of the intellectual wonders of the early 20th century: German physics. Then history strikes in a way that can't easily be gnawed through. Herzberg has a Jewish wife, and after the Nazis take over he cannot work any more, despite being able to trace his Aryan roots back 400 years and becoming one of the leading lights in the study of the physics of atoms and molecules. When he finally comes to Canada, he arrives at what everyone saw as a most unlikely place: the University of Saskatchewan. He goes there because one of his postdoctoral students came from there and recommends him, and because Walter Murray, then the president of the university, has vision. He sees what the University of Toronto and McGill don't: Gerhard Herzberg will beaver his way to the top. He sees what the Canadian Department of Immigration didn't in the 1930s: that the future of the country would be determined by those who it let in and not those it kept out. Herzberg is a great experimental physical chemist, and the value of that is almost impossible to appreciate for the layperson, who likely will skip through the reasons Herzberg got the Nobel to dwell on the nice description of how, over time, the Swedes have learned to turn the event into an unforgettable party. Second, the latter half of the book includes a lengthy discourse on the National Research Council and its difficulties in dealing with being both a theoretical and a practical institution. Again, it's hard to believe that a general reader will care. Accustomed as we are to a world of tabloid titillation, it would be nice to see some greater psychological exploration of what it means when the 67-year-old Herzberg marries a 31-year-old second wife within a year of the death of his absolutely devoted first wife.
