(HN, 2/28/98) 1533 Feb 28, Michel de Montaigne (d.1592), was born near Bordeaux, France. He was the French moralist who created the personal essay. Montaigne was brought up by his father under peasant guidance and a German tutor for Latin. He spent a lifetime of political service under Henry IV, and then composed his "Essays." This was the first book to reveal with utter honesty and frankness the author's mind and heart. Montaigne sought to reach beyond his own illusions, to see himself as he really was, which was not just the way others saw him. "Nothing is so firmly believed as what we least know."

In 1942 Dr. Hench entered military service as a lieutenant-colonel in the Medical Corps, becoming Chief of the Medical Service and Director of the Army's Rheumatism Centre at the Army and Navy General Hospital. Leaving the army with the rank of colonel, in 1946, he became expert consultant to the Army Surgeon General, which position is still held by him.
At the Mayo Clinic he specialized in arthritic disease. In the course of his work he observed the favourable effects of jaundice on arthritic patients, causing a remission of pain. Other bodily changes, for example pregnancy, produced the same effect. These and other observations led him gradually to the conclusion that the pain-alleviating substance was a steroid.
In the period 1930-1938, Dr. E. C. Kendall had isolated several steroids from the adrenal gland cortex. After several years of collaboration with Dr. Kendall, it was decided to try the effect of one of these substances, Compound E (later named cortisone), on arthritic patients. Delay in implementing this decision was caused by Dr. Hench's military service in World War II and by the costly and complicated isolation of the substance. In 1948-1949, cortisone was successfully tested on arthritic patients. Hench also treated patients with ACTH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland which stimulates the adrenal gland.

Tadeus Reichstein
Tadeus Reichstein (Quarles van Ufford) was born on July 20, 1897 in Wloclawek, Poland. The family moved to Switzerland in 1906. Educated in Zurich, he held posts in the department of organic chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, from 1930. From 1946 to 1967 he was professor of organic chemistry at the University of Basel. He died on August 1, 1996 in Basel, Switzerland. He gained his scientific merits in many fields of research such as total synthesis of ascorbic acid, structure elucidation of steroid hormones, namely aldosteron, and his leading research in the chemistry of cardiac glycosides, just to mention a few of his research topics. The field of secondary plant products brought him back to the neighbouring area of botany and plant taxonomy. He made a contribution to the studies of structure and properties of sugars, vitamins, steroids, and cardiac glucosides contained in plants. He studied the structure of hormones in the adrenal glands and isolated various biologically active substances. Apart from hormone research, he was the first who artificially synthesizes vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - first vitamin synthesis (1933), a feat achieved about the same time in England by Sir Walter N. Haworth and co-workers. He also laid the foundation for the industrial production of Vitamin C. In 1936 he isolated cortisone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH and some others hormones of suprarenal gland. Reichstein's researches on steroids, particularly on hormones of the adrenal cortex, paralleled those of Kendall in the United States; his "substance F," described and named by him in 1936, proved identical to Kendall's "compound E," or cortisone. Cortisone is now used to treat conditions ranging from skin rash to joint disorders. ACTH is a widely-used drug to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Jacques Forestier
French internist, born July 27, 1890; died March 15, 1978.
Associated eponyms:
Forestier's disease

Forestier-Certonciny syndrome
A syndrome of pain and stiffness of the shoulder an hip girdle; occasionally, severe and incapacitating. Fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, muscular stiffness and tenderness, and fever. Biography: Jacques Forestier was born to a medical family. His father was Henri Forestier, director of the therapy centre Aix-les-Bains in France, with traditions in physiotherapy and hydrotherapy dating centuries back. Having completed his medical studies in Paris, Forestier obtained a position at the Cochin Hospital, where his interest in rheumatology was aroused. During World War I he was awarded a medal of honour because he, as a field physician, among other things took 150 enemy soldiers prisoners of war. In 1922 he married Adrienne Japuis - and together they got seven children. In 1928 he succeeded his father at Aix-les-Bains. He was then a medical authority, to large degree due to his studies of Lipiodol. It was administered intramuscularly, and it was early observed that at the site of the injection X-ray dense changes of mucosa often occurred. Forestier concluded that this phenomenon might be used for diagnostical purposes. Guided by his teacher, Jean Athanase Siccard (1872-1929), Jacques demonstrated that the ingredient rendered an excellent X-ray contrast when administered to the spinal canal. Thus was laid the foundation for the technique of myelography.
