    Otto Hahn
Otto Hahn was born in Frankfort am Main on March 8,1879. He received his doctorate in chemistry in 1901. As a radiochemist, working under Ernest Rutherford , he discovered radiothorium while extracting radium from a sample of barium salt. At the end of 1907, Lise Meitner came to Berlin from Vienna and thus began more than thirty years' collaboration. The first significant result of this collaboration was an important technique for purifying radioactive material that took advantage of the recoil energy of atoms produced in alpha decay. Following the discovery of artificial radioactivity, Hahn again collaborated with Meitner and afterwards with Fritz Strassmann on the processes of irradiating uranium and thorium with neutrons. His most spectacular discovery came at the end of 1938. While working jointly with Strassmann, Hahn discovered the fission of uranium. This discovery earned Hahn the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1944, and led directly to the development of the atomic bomb. In 1911, he became a member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute. He eventually served as its director from 1928 - 1945 until the Institute was taken into Allied custody following World War II. Hahn died on July 28, 1968.

Nobel Prizes and other distinguished scientific awards to members of the Kaiser Wilhelm/Max Planck Society Scientific prizes and awards are an important indicator of the quality of achievement in research. The highest-ranking of these international awards is the Nobel Prize . Since the Max Planck Society was founded in 1948, it has produced fifteen Nobel Prize laureates alone. In addition, fifteen Nobel Prizes were awarded to scientists of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society between 1914 and 1944.
Scientists with the Max Planck Society, both men and women, are regularly among the winners of top scientific awards:
The Max Planck Society reports regularly in „MPG Spiegel“ as well as in its „Jahresbericht“ on awards and honours conferred upon its scientists.

Otto Hahn's Laboratory Bench Otto Hahn: 1879 - 1968 Awarded the 1944 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery of fission. He missed the award ceremony because, at the time, he was a war prisoner of Great Brittain. Hahn and associates Fritz Strassman and Lise Meitner were working away in late 1938 and early 1939 bombarding Uranium atoms with neutrons. The result seemed to be multiple atoms of Barium, element 56. Meitner assisted in the publishing of two papers, "Disintegration of uranium by neutrons: a new type of nuclear reaction" and "Physical evidence for the division of heavy nucleii under neutron bombardment", which used the term "fission" for the first time. Leo Szilard, having read the Hahn-Strassman paper wrote to Lewis Strauss on January 25, 1939: "I feel I ought to let you know of a very sensational new development in nuclear physics."

In1906 he returned to Germany and became professor in Berlin. In 1928 he became director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. From 1906 he studied (with L.Meitner) the radioactive breakdown of thorium. They discovered radioactive isotopes. By 1935 he started to study the bombardment of uranium with neutrons. Configured to carry passengers and ore, the NS Otto Hahn was powered by a single 38 MW reactor which first achieved criticality in 1968. The Otto Hahn made its first port call in Casablanca in 1970 and continued to operate under nuclear power until 1979. In nine years, the Otto Hahn steamed 650,000 nautical miles and visited 33 ports in 22 countries. The NS Otto Hahn was deactivated in 1979 and between 1979 and 1982, her nuclear propulsion equipment was removed and replaced with standard marine diesels. In 1983, the NS Otto Hahn was recomissioned as the contained ship MS Trophy and leased into commercial marine service. The ship was subsequently renamed MS Norasia Susan (1983), MS Norasia Helga (1985), MS Hua Kang He (1989) and MS Madre. Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Otto Hahn The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1944 Hahn's work has won recognition in many learned circles. In 1912 he became scientific member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute since 1928. Hahn has been granted membership of the Academies of Berlin, Gottingen, Munich, Halle, Stockholm, Vienna, Boston, Madrid, Helsinki, Lisbon, Mainz, Rome (Vatican), Allahabad, Copenhagen, and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry 1944 "for his discovery of the fission of heavy nuclei." At the end of 1907, Dr. Lise Meitner came to Berlin from Vienna and then began more than thirty years' collaboration. Their joint work embraced: investigations on beta-rays, their absorbability, magnetic spectra, etc.;use of the radioactive recoil, discovered shortly before by Hahn, to obtain new radioactive transformation products. Between 1914 and 1918 Hahn's work was interrupted by his service in the First World War, but he resumed his research with Professor Meitner in 1918, and discovered protactinium, the long-lived mother substance of the actinium series. Hahn's own particular sphere was chemistry and he further discovered Uranium Z, the first case of a nuclear isomerism of radioactive kinds of atoms. Hahn used the emanation method to test substances superficially rich or poor, and he elaborated the strontium method to determine the age of geological periods.
