4. Karl Gjellerup - Autobiography
My father was Pastor Carl adolph gjellerup, my mother, Anna karl gjellerup died inKlotzsche, near Dresden, in 1919. From nobel Lectures, Literature 19011967
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1917/gjellerup-autobio.html
(1857) [John the Baptist], Nogle sagn (1865) [Some Stories], Kors og kaerlighed (1858) [Cross and Love], Den evige strid (1878) [The Eternal Strife], and Mit liv og levned (1898) [My Life]. I was graduated summa cum laude from Haerslevs Grammar School in 1874. Before this I had made several attempts at writing; immediately after graduation I wrote a tragedy, Scipio Africanus , and a drama, Arminius En idealist (1878) [An Idealist], which was published in November on the same day as Den evige strid Arvelighed og moral (1881) [Heredity and Morals], a book with an evolutionary viewpoint, which was awarded the University Gold Medal. The novel Germanernes laerling (1882) [The Apprentice of the Teutons] (in its very title a program for existence), a collection of poems entitled (1881) [Hawthome], end Aander og tider En klassisk maaned (1884) [A Classical Month] and Vandreaaret (1885) [Wander Year], followed. In the latter of these two I broke off from the followers of Georg Brandes. Then appeared the first work of mine which was received with excitement, the lyrical tragedy Brynhild (1884), which had already been sketched during my student years, and which was dedicated to Eugenia. From the summer of 1885 to the fall of 1887 I lived in Dresden, where I wrote the scenes from the revolution

Gjellerup, Karl Adolph
Gjellerup By courtesy of the Royal Danish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Copenhagen (b. June 2, 1857, Roholte, Den.d. Oct. 11, 1919, Klotzsche, Ger.), Danish poet and novelist who shared the 1917 Nobel Prize for Literature with his compatriot Henrik Pontoppidan The son of a parson, Gjellerup studied theology, although, after coming under the influence of Darwinism and the new radical ideas of the critic Georg Brandes, he thought of himself as an atheist. This atheism, which turned out to be no more than a break with Christianity, was proclaimed in his first book En Idealist Shildring af Epigonus (1878; "An Idealist, A Description of Epigonus") and in his farewell to theology, (1882; "The Teutons' Apprentice"). The latter, however, indicated the path that was to take him, via German idealist philosophy and Romanticism, back to a conscious search for religion, which finally found its satisfaction in his preoccupation with Buddhism and other Oriental religions. This last period is represented by two books: Minna (1889), a novel of contemporary Germany, where Gjellerup lived in his later years, and

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Karl Gjellerup (1857-1919) Danish poet and novelist who together with his compatriot Henrik Pontoppidan won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1917. In Denmark Gjellerup's award was received with little enthusiasm. He had been regarded long as a German writer. Because Sweden was neutral during World War I, the divided prize did not arouse political speculations about partial decision, but showed on the other hand allegiance between the Nordic neighbors. Karl Gjellerup was born in Roholte, in southern Zealand, as the son of a minister. His father, Pastor Carl Adolph Gjellerup, died when he was three years old. Gjellerup was brought up in Copenhagen by his mother's (Anna Fibiger) cousin, the minister and poet Johannes Fibiger. Gjellerup was expected to have a career in church. In 1874 he entered the University of Copenhagen, where he studied theology, graduating in 1878. However, under the influence of Darwinism , Herbert Spencer, and the critic Georg Brandes , he had already started to feel attraction to atheism before taking the degree. Brandes's university lectures arouse much attention - he advocated free development of the individual and naturalism in literature.
