A Conversation With Walter Gilbert.(Brief Article)(Interview) Author/s: Issue: Nov, 1998 Throughout a scientific career that has included stints in the fields of theoretical physics, molecular biology, biophysics, and biochemistry, Walter Gilbert has helped substantiate the philosophical theorem that change is the only constant. "It's easier to change what you do than people think it is," Gilbert says. "If you don't change, your field changes around you." As a teenager, Gilbert won a regional science fair in Washington, D.C. by creating a telescope that could photograph sun spots. He recalls that working on the project and winning the fair reinforced his relationship with science. "When I went through high school and college, I thought the most natural thing was to go on and become a scientist," Gilbert says. "I didn't conceive of what I was doing as preparation for a job."

PROFILE IN THE NEWS
WALTER GILBERT: HARVARD'S ENTHUSIASTIC RESEARCHER
Author: - ROBERT COOKE Date: Wednesday, October 15, 1980
Page: Section: RUN OF PAPER When Walter Gilbert gets excited about something, the weekends get ignored, nights are long and exuberance becomes contagious. And enthusiasm ran wild in Harvard's biology laboratory yesterday after Gilbert, 48, was named corecipient of the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work with the basic molecule of heredity, DNA. Gilbert, after toasting friends and colleagues with a glass of bubbly, said that "I feel overjoyed and overwhelmed. I was totally startled. I hadn't taken my coat off yet this morning when the phone rang" and he was told of the award. Gilbert shares half of the $212,000 award with English biologist Frederick Sanger, and the other half goes to Stanford University biologist Paul Berg. All three winners have been deeply involved in research that has made new genetic manipulation techniques - referred to loosely as genetic engineering - possible. As a result, a new industry is being spawned and many small new companies are being formed to exploit the technology. Gilbert, who is Harvard University's American Cancer Society professor of molecular biology, started his academic career, however, as a mathematician-p hysicist. He came to the Harvard faculty in 1958 as a lecturer in physics, specializing in study of subatomic particles.

HARVARD PROFESSOR GETS NOBEL
WALTER GILBERT WORKED IN DNA
Author: By Dick Soderlund Associated Press Date: Tuesday, October 14, 1980
Page: Section: RUN OF PAPER Four Americans, including a Harvard professor, and one Briton won the 1980 Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry today for their work on the origins of the universe and of life. The physics award was given for nuclear research that contributed to the big-bang theory of the creation of the universe. The chemistry prize went for biochemical studies of nucleic acids, the master blueprints of life. James W. Cronin of the University of Chicago and Val L. Fitch of Princeton University won the physics prize. Professor Paul Berg of Stanford University in California received one half of the $212,000 prize in chemistry. The other half went jointly to Professor Walter Gilbert of Harvard and Professor Frederick Sanger of Cambridge University. Gilbert and Sanger were cited by the awarding body "for their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids." Gilbert, 48, told a reporter he was "delighted, pleased and honored" to receive the chemistry prize.

Conference Kicks off March 1, 2003! Mission Statement
The Hippocratic Society is an undergraduate organization which seeks to expand the horizons of those sectors of society which have an interest in medicine by addressing related issues in social, political, legal, and ethical fields. With this focus, we hope to explore the relationship between medicine and a range of other disciplines, from law and public policy to anthropology. We offer our audience an opportunity to broaden their perspectives by actively considering imminent issues in medicine.
In collaboration with the Harvard Hippocratic Society, we realize our objectives by organizing formal conferences and symposia, as well as by hosting informal small-group discussions, both of which provide dynamic forums for participation, discussion, and learning. Additionally, we produce a biannual Journal of the Hippocratic Society , a multidisciplinary publication that likewise highlights the inter-dependence of medicine and other fields. Thus, we seek to raise awareness of key issues that are becoming increasingly consequential to society.

DETROIT(BUSINESS WIRE)May 9, 2000High school students participating in this year's International Science and Engineering Fair 2000, May 7-12 in Detroit, will have a chance to meet with a global panel of scientific "superstars."
Five Nobel Laureates, two Charles Stark Draper Prize winners, and one Enrico Fermi Award recipient will be visiting the 51st annual science fair at the Cobo Convention Center and participating in a question-and-answer panel discussion with the student finalists on Tuesday, May 9, 12-2 p.m.
"It will be a lively panel discussion," said Tzeitel Hirni, Science Service marketing manager. "The biggest thing that the Nobel Laureates and other award-winning scientists want to do during the visit to ISEF is meet with the students themselves. They don't want to be VIPs. They want to talk with the students."
The Science Service, which is based in Washington, D.C., has been coordinating the annual International Science and Engineering Fair since the first ISEF in 1950. The Science Service is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of science among people of all ages through publications and educational programs.
The International Science and Engineering Fair is held in a different city each year. Detroit's plans to hold the first ISEF of the 21st century were laid back in 1987. The event will draw thousands of students, judges, volunteers, chaperones and translators to Detroit's downtown and is estimated to generate $8 million for the Southeastern Michigan economy.
