John Galsworthy (1867-1933)
English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932.
Galsworthy was also a successful dramatist, his plays, written in a naturalistic style, usually examining some controversial ethical or social problem. They include The Silver Box (1906), which, like many of his other works, has a legal theme and depicts a bitter contrast of the law's treatment of the rich and the poor; Strife (1909), a study of industrial relations; Justice (1910), a realistic portrayal of prison life that roused so much feeling that it led to reform; and Loyalties (1922), the best of his later plays. He also wrote verse.
In 1905 Galsworthy married Ada Pearson, the divorced wife of his first cousin, A.J. Galsworthy. Galsworthy had, in secret, been closely associated with his future wife for about ten years before their marriage. Irene in The Forsyte Saga is to some extent a portrait of Ada Galsworthy, although her first husband was wholly unlike Soames Forsyte.

Forsytein taru 2
Forsytein taru on englantilaisen Nobel-kirjailijan, John Galsworthyn pääteos. Se on laaja sukuromaani, joka kertoo varakkaan lontoolaisen porvarisperheen kohtaloista kolmen sukupolven aikana. Forsytein taru nosti John Galsworthyn maailmanmaineeseen.
Kirjailija suuntasi romaaneissa ja näytelmissä yhteiskuntakritiikkinsä varakkaiden luokkien hengetöntä, pelkästään taloudellista etua tavoittelevaa maailmankatsomusta vastaan.
"Forsytein taru on mitä hienoimmin taidekeinoin suoritettu läpileikkaus porvarillisesta Lontoosta. Teos heijastelee syvällistä ja aitoa kauneutta." (Rafael Koskimies) kpl Näytä korin sisältö Tyhjennä korin sisältö Takaisin

STORIES From SUSSEX The Spirit of John Galsworthy John Galsworthy
Novelist and dramatist, who was born at Coombe in 1867 and died, at Hampstead on January 31, 1933, won a European reputation by novels depicting English character as it is moulded in the landed or propertied class, and by his plays illustrating social anomalies and the clash of interests involved in modern life and organisation.
His education was that of the English gentleman. From Harrow, where he captained the football club, he went to Oxford. After taking his degree he was called to the Bar but did not practise. He sought experience by travelling widely.
In a journey round the world he met, in a sailing ship between Australia and South Africa, Joseph Conrad, then a Polish captain, and it was largely through his advice that Conrad, who had already begun his first novel, persisted with the fiction that made him famous.
Galsworthy's own firrst novel was published when he was 31, and he taught himself the art of fiction for five years before he commanded attention by The Man of Property, an introduction to the Forsyte family whose fortunes he allowed us to follow for many years, with ever-growing fame for him. In all he published about thirty books, tales long and short, and some poems.
