Kenichi Fuckui
TOKYO (AP) - Kenichi Fukui, the only Japanese to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, died of cancer Friday. He was 79. Fukui, a professor emeritus at Kyoto University, received the prize in 1981 for a theory which helped more clearly explain the course of chemical reactions. His ideas were the basis for other discoveries and helped pharmaceutical companies develop new drugs. Fukui graduated from Kyoto University's engineering department in 1941, became an assistant professor there in 1945 and remained in the industrial chemical engineering department for the rest of his career. Asia Past and Future
"A SIATRENDS [COVER, DEC. 15] is a timely platform for Asia-wide discussion of the 20 years past and the 20 hence. As you state, much good has come about through Asia's twin wheels of progress, industrialization and urbanization. Ills as well, pollution and the breakdown of traditional values. What next? The West is set to harness the information revolution, one that will bring forth many opportunities. In commerce, the change will be in the unclogging of the cholesterol that clutters the arteries of international trade. No more is there a need for a complicated and inefficient process between the manufacture of a product and its consumption. The benevolent vultures of cyberspace will disintermediate. It will start off at the wholesale level. Remember, the largest market in the world, that for wholesale U.S. dollars of some $3 trillion a day, has been done over cyberspace for the last 10 years. Internet and add-on technologies enable this to be expanded to most other products and services.

Japanese researchers Masatoshi Koshiba and Koichi Tanaka boosted science in Japan when they were awarded Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry, marking the first time two Japanese had won the prestigious award in the same year. Koshiba, 76, scooped a share in the physics prize along with American researchers Raymond Davis Jr. and Riccardo Giacconi, for his work in proving the existence of tiny particles called neutrinos. Their research has given birth to neutrino astronomy that is used to study far-distant objects. Tanaka, a 45-year-old corporate researcher at Shimadzu Corp. in Kyoto was honored with the prize in chemistry along with American John B. Fenn of Virginia Commonwealth University, and Kurt Wuethrich of the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California. The three were honored for inventing procedures that let scientists quickly identify proteins and produce images of them.

More good tidings arrived from Sweden Wednesday night the announcement that Koichi Tanaka, an engineer at Shimadzu Corp., has been awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. The news comes only a day after the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences announced that Masatoshi Koshiba, professor emeritus at Tokyo University, had won the Nobel Prize in physics. Japanese have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for three years in a row. Since 2000, four Japanese have been awarded Nobel prizes. These streaks are unprecedented. Tanaka, who is only 43, was recognized for inventing a technique for analyzing proteins which has contributed to advances in the life sciences and the development of new pharmaceuticals, and has been applied to areas such as the inspection of food and the diagnosis of cancer. Tanaka has devoted himself to the study of proteins while working in the research department of a private corporation. Previous Japanese Nobel laureates have all had stronger ties to academia. Tanaka is not well known in academic circles in Japan, but his research had been held in high regard in the U.S. and Europe. The news of the award "came as a total surprise," said Tanaka.
