The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

THE WARS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AFRICA: THE BOER WAR (1899-1902)

INTRODUCTION
The 25 years before the outbreak of the First World War was a period of increased international tensions which revolved around the naval arms race and the scramble for territory/colonies in the Third World. Not surprisingly many people reacted to these developments by participating in organised peace associations, particularly in Germany where the position of the military since the wars of unification in the 1860s and 1870 was especially powerful. Two of the most important figures in the German peace movement were the novelist Bertha von Suttner and the bookseller and publisher Alfred Fried. Suttner's novel Die Waffen nieder! (1889) ("Throw down your weapons") and Fried's Handbook of the Peace Movement (1905) were particularly influential. One of Suttner's greatest successes was to influence the wealthy Swedish chemist and munitions manufacturer, Alfred Nobel, to establish a Nobel Peace Prize with his estate.
Also in this period we see a concern by sociologists to explain the rise of a politically powerful "military-industrial complex" after all the signs of nineteenth-century economic development suggested to them the withering away of the military and the predominance of peaceful free trade and industry. Herbert Spencer, in several essays in
