Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Werner Forssmann (1904-1979)
In 1929 in a small hospital in Eberswald Germany Werner Forssmann, a young surgical resident, anesthetized his own elbow, inserted a catheter in his antecubital vein and, catheter dangling from his arm, proceeded to a basement x-ray room where he documented the catheter's position in his right atrium — proving that a catheter could be inserted safely into a human heart.
Forssmann's goal was to find a safe way to inject drugs for cardiac resuscitation. He was determined that catheterization was the key, but it was believed at the time that any entry into the heart would be fatal. Forssmann was immediately fired for his self-experimentation, despite the significance of his discovery. The popular press acclaimed his work, but the medical establishment branded him as crazy, scorning him and ignoring his work for over a decade.
He continued to experiment with catheterization in dogs and it is alleged that he stopped self-experimentation only when he had used all of his veins with 17 cut downs. Discouraged by his lack of acceptance in cardiology he switched to urology and eventually became a country doctor. He never returned to cardiology research but was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1956 (along with cardiology innovators Cournand and Richards) for his pioneering efforts.

History of Angioplasty
This brief timeline is intended to give an overview of the history of interventional cardiology. More in-depth information can be accessed through the links provided, as well as from the reference sources listed at the bottom of the page.
  • 3000 B.C. — Egyptians perform bladder catheterizations using metal pipes.
  • 400 B.C. — Catheters fashioned from hollow reeds and pipes are used in cadavers to study the function of cardiac valves.
  • — Hales conducts the first cardiac catheterization of a horse using brass pipes, a glass tube and the trachea of a goose.
  • — French physiologist Bernard coins the term "cardiac catheterization" and uses catheters to record intracardiac pressures in animals.
  • — First documented human cardiac catheterization is performed by Dr. Werner Forssmann in Eberswald, Germany. (Click to see video)
  • — Cournand and Richards employ the cardiac catheter as a diagnostic tool for the first time, utilizing catheter techniques to measure cardiac output.

Born 30 Oct 1928; died 16 Nov 1999.
American microbiologist , corecipient of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1978 (with American Hamilton Othanel Smith and Swiss scientist Werner Arber). The winners were cited for their discovery and application of restriction enzymes , which provide the "chemical knives" to cut genes (= DNA) into defined fragments. These may then be used (1) to determine the order of genes on chromosomes, (2) to analyse the chemical structure of genes and of regions of DNA which regulate the function of genes, and (3) to create new combinations of genes. Thus new avenues are opened to study the basic problems in developmental biology; and in medicine, to help the prevention and treatment of malformations, hereditary diseases and cancer. Robert C. Seamans, Jr.

FEBRUARY 23 - BIRTHS Shigefumi Mori
(source)
Born 23 Feb 1951
Japanese mathematician who has made important contributions to the field of algebraic geometry. His major work, in which he proved the existence of minimal models for all three-dimensional algebraic varieties (Jan 1988), has been dubbed Mori's Program. Within ten years since his first published paper, Mori had thereby completed what many said could never be done. In 1979, Mori published his first major results, a proof of the Hartshorne conjecture, which stated that a certain class of algebraic varieties are projective in nature. In other words, these varieties or sets of solutions to given polynomial equations could be described using projective geometry. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1990 for his work in algebraic geometry. Allan MacLeod Cormack
(source)
Born 23 Feb 1924; died 7 May 1998.
South African-born American physicist who formulated the mathematical algorithms that made possible the development of a powerful new diagnostic technique, the cross-sectional X-ray imaging process known as computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanning. He first described this in two papers in 1963 and 1964. X-ray tomography is a process by which a picture of an imaginary slice through an object (or the human body) is built up from information from detectors rotating around the body. For this work, he was awarded a share of the 1979 Nobel Prize. Cormack was unusual in the field of Nobel laureates because he never earned a doctorate degree in medicine or any other field of science.
