Translation from the German text I was born in Solln, near Munich, on 10 November 1918 as the third child of the Professor of Physics at the Technical College of Munich , Dr. Karl T. Fischer (died 1953), and his wife, Valentine, Danzer (died 1935). After completing four years at elementary school I went on to grammar school in 1929, from which I graduated in 1937 with my Abitur University of Munich . After turning down an offer of the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Jena University of Marburg . In 1964 I took the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the Technical College of Munich, which had been vacated by Professor Hieber. In the same year I was elected a member of the Mathematics/Natural Science section of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences; in 1969 I was appointed a member of the German Academy of Scientists Leopoldina . In 1972 I was given an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Munich.

Fischer, Ernst Otto
(b. Nov. 10, 1918, Munich, Ger.), German theoretical chemist and educator who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1973 for his identification of a completely new way in which metals and organic substances can combine. He shared the prize with Geoffrey Wilkinson of Great Britain. Fischer served in the German army before and during World War II. In 1952 he received a doctorate in natural sciences from the Technical University in Munich. He lectured there in 1954-57 and became professor of inorganic chemistry and director of the Inorganic Chemistry Institute in 1964. He served on faculties at the University of Munich (1957-64) and in Jena (1959) and Marburg (1960 and 1964). In 1951 Fischer read about a newly developed synthetic compound called ferrocene whose structure was unknown. After studying the substance, he concluded that it consisted of two five-sided carbon rings with a single iron atom sandwiched between them. Wilkinson made this same discovery of organometallic sandwich compounds independently of Fischer, and the two men shared the Nobel Prize for their work.

Fischer (died 1953), and his wife, Valentine, nee Danzer (died 1935). Shortly before the end of his two years' compulsory military service, the Second World War broke out. He served in Poland, France, and Russia. In the winter of 1941/2 he began to study Chemistry at the Technical College in Munich during a period of study leave. He took up a position as scientific assistant to Professor Walter Hieber in the Inorganic Chemistry Department, and under his guidance he dedicated himself to working on his doctoral thesis, " The Mechanisms of Carbon Monoxide Reactions of Nickel II Salts in the presence of Dithionites and Sulfoxylates". After receiving his doctorate in 1952, he was invited by Professor Hieber to continue his activities at the college and consequently chose to specialise in the study of transition metal and organo-metallic chemistry. In 1957 I was awarded the Chemistry Prize by the Gottingen Academy of Sciences. The Society of German Chemists awarded me the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize in 1959. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1973 jointly with Geofrey Wilkinson "for their pioneering work, performed independently, on the chemistry of the organometallic, so called sandwich compounds".

1970. Luis F. Leloir

Organometallic chemistry has developed into an important field of chemistry since the Second World War. Research into this frontier region between organic and inorganic chemistry has led to a deeper understanding of chemical bonds in general, and also to the preparative and industrial use of organometallic compounds. Ferrocene Fe(C H was discovered in 1951. T. J. Kealy and Peter L. Pauson attempted to explain its structure using the standard theory of the day, assuming a simple bond between the iron atom and one carbon atom in each ring. But my colleagues and I succeeded in verifying, simultaneously with Geoffrey Wilkinson and Robert B. Woodward, that ferrocene has a double conical (or sandwich) structure. It then seemed probable that aromatic compounds of chromium involving six-carbon (benzene) rings would have a similar structure. Lars Onsager, Minoru Tsutsui, and Harald Zeiss postulated a double conical structure for them in 1954. Our group also considered it possible that a compound of benzene and chromium might exist. Dibenzenechromium synthesized in 1956. Loaned by Ernst Otto Fischer inventory number: 1994- L 15.000 mass (including flask): 1.6 kg; height of flask: 21 cm
