Bring me sunshine?
Anthony Butler and Rosslyn Nicholson shed light on the two-faced contribution of sunlight to human health
So what does sunlight actually do to us when we sunbathe? The sunlight hits our skin which, with a total area of about 1.8m The lifetime of singlet oxygen in aqueous (blood and plasma) solutions in the body is relatively short. These polar media tend to facilitate the production of the superoxide anion radical, via transfer of an electron from the photosensitiser: The superoxide anion radical is capable of causing as much cellular damage as singlet oxygen. It can react either as an oxidant or a reducing agent, is a very good nucleophile, and is a base that can be protonated. In normal healthy skin, damage caused by singlet oxygen is not too extensive. To bring about extensive skin cell death via this mechanism, such as in the treatment of skin cancer by photodynamic therapy, an external photosensitiser is needed. Some soaps and cosmetics have been found to act as very efficient photosensitisers – hence so-called 'bikini dermatitis', a nasty skin rash wherever the soap or cosmetic has been applied. Niels Ryberg Finsen Born in the Faeroes of Icelandic parents in 1860, Niels Finsen was educated in Thorshavn (capital of the Faeroes), Herlufsholm in Denmark and Reykjavik in Iceland. In spite of language difficulties during his schooling he did well enough to study medicine in Copenhagen. He graduated in 1890 and, for a time, taught anatomy at the university. In 1893 he relinquished that post to devote himself to scientific research, earning a modest income as a private tutor to medical students. In spite of ill health throughout his life (he suffered from Pick's disease) he worked hard and was a successful sportsman.

The use of light therapy in medicine has a long history. The first light source used in photomedicine was natural sunlight. Even in ancient Egypt sunlight was used for medical treatments. Later Hippocrates described the use of sunlight to cure various medical disorders. Although sunlight therapy had no scientific explanations at that time, the healing power was clear, and Roman and Arabian physicians brought light therapy into general medical use.
The Danish physician Niels Ryberg Finsen founded modern light therapy about 100 years ago. In 1903 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on light therapy. Finsen also developed the first device to generate technically synthesized sunrays. There are clear advantages in using technically synthesized sunrays: for example the parameters of intensity and the emitted light spectrum are controllable and therefore reproducible.
At the beginning of the development of photo medicine mostly infrared and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum were used in modern light therapy. In 1981 a Hungarian research team created a light source that was originally based on laser therapy, but worked with a combination of visible light and infrared radiation. Based on this technology later the BIOPTRON Light Therapy System was created.

Did you ever notice that when things get tough, they get tough all at once. Bad things, or even stressful things, don't usually happen one at a time. They usually happen in big bunches. To increase their stressful effect, I guess.

Return to previous page Ultraviolet Light in Medicine
A sample of blood is drawn from a patient's arm. The sample is irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light so that the disease-causing microorganisms and the cells containing them are killed and marked. When the blood is returned to the body, the immune system sees the dead organisms. This makes the live organisms visible to the immune system as well. UV blood irradiation has been called the perfect vaccine because it immunizes the body with the dead cells of the organisms that are already active in the body. Blood absorbs some of the UV light energy in the ten or so seconds that it is treated. Once back inside the body, the blood then reradiates the UV. Ultraviolet blood irradiation gives a general boost to the immune system, in part by stimulating a large increase in the number of phagocytes in the bloodstream. A marked increase in oxygen in the blood has also been noted after a treatment. John Richardson, president of the Foundation for Blood Irradiation, once had a UV blood treatment. When the blood was reinjected into his arm, he felt a dramatic change. "You can feel the energy in your blood," he said. "A real perk-up. Oh, man." One patient, who I will refer to as Dave, was diagnosed as having bronchial pneumonia. A second doctor said he had chronic bronchitis. Dave tried various prescription drugs for two months with no improvement in his condition. After one UV blood irradiation treatment, the illness went away.

Johannes V. Jensen. Alfred Nobel was born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden to a family of engineers. On December 10, 1901 the Nobel Prize one of the world's most prestigious prizes was awarded for the first time. Year 2001 wee are celebrating the five prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace, which have now been awarded for one hundred years. The Swedish medals were designed by master engraver Erik Lindberg (1873-1966) and the Norwegian Peace medal by the Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). In 1968, "Sveriges Riksbank" instituted the "Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel" in time for the bank's tercentenary celebrations. Danish Winners
