    INSIGHTS OF A NEW ODYSSEUS
Author: By Christina Robb Globe Staff Date: Friday, December 18, 1981
Page: Section: LIVING A Poem in Two Voices, by Odysseus Elytis, translated from Greek by Athan Anagostopoulos. Houghton Mifflin. 74 pp. $10 SELECTED POEMS, by Odysseus Elytis, translated by Edmund Keeley, Philip Sherard and various other hands. Viking (Penguin). 114 pp. $12.95 ($6.95 paper) Odysseus Elytis published his first book of poems in 1940. The contrast between the soft surrealism of these early lyrics ("Dream after dream arrived/ For the jasmine's birthday . . .") and the bloody world war in which he was serving as an officer has taken him a lifetime to take in and express. In 1979, the Greek poet won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his new poem, an epic dialogue for the age of disco and anxiety. Finally, in this poem, "Maria Nephele" (which means Mary Cloud), all the beauty, destruction, holiness, tackiness, abstraction and sensuality that Elytis has experienced find ways to live together. His experience is not so much integrated as safely housed in this carefully structured arrangement of 45 lyrics. The poem has two voices, Maria and "the antiphonist" (Anagnostopoulos) or "other speaker" (Keeley-Sherrard).

Many prominent newspapers, such as The Times, The Independent, The Guardian, The New York Times covered Elytis' death with analysis of his work and its correlation to the Greek environment and history. Roderick Biton, professor of modern Greek literature at King's College of London wrote that "Odysseus Elytis did not write by the rules. For him poetry was not an escape from the responsibilities of everyday life. He believed that poetry is the basic responsibility in life."

    Odysseus Elytis biography
Odysseus Elytis, recipient of the 1979 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born to a wealthy family in Iraklion, Crete. His original name was Odysseus Alepoudhelis. He used the pseudonym to distinguish his writing from the family soap manufaturing business. He attended the University of Athens School of Law, but he dropped out to pursue his literary career. He later worked for the newspaper KATHIMERINI. Following World War II he worked for the National Broadcasiting Institute. Nicknamed "the sun-drinking poet," Elytis' work reflects the influence of the French Surrealism movement. His first volume of poetry, PROSANATOLISMOI (ORIENTATIONS), was published when he was 29. He gained an international reputation with ASTHMA IROIKA KE PENTHIMO GHIA TON HAMENO ANTHIPOLOCHAGO TIS ALVANIS (HEROIC AND ELEGIAC SONG FOR THE LOST SECOND LIEUTENANT OF THE ALBANIAN CAMPAIGN). He was the first Greek to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. bodyOffer(20214) Odysseus Elytis died in Athens, Greece in 1996. CHRONOLOGY He was born in Iraklion, Crete.
