Main Publications List FAQ Concordance ... Archives Eliot resources on the Internet are legion, and we will make no attempt to be exhaustive in listing them. The following sites are, in our opinion, some of the best of the lot, and themselves include further links not listed here. If you have a favorite site we have neglected, however, send us a note and perhaps we'll add it to the list. Regrettably, Bruce Ong's long-familiar Eliot page seems no longer to be available.
Works
Many of Eliot's early works, up to and including The Waste Land , are now available legally on the Web, notably at the Bartleby Archive at Columbia University. Later works are occasionally to be found on the Web, but in most cases are posted illegally, often in poorly edited and unreliable texts. Please don't ask us to send you the texts of any of Eliot's work!

LETTERATURA STRANIERA ANALISI DEL NOVECENTO THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT
Prufrock e altre osservazioni

Eliot ,Thomas Stearns
American poet, playwright, and critic; born in St. Louis, Mo. He studied philosophy at Harvard , the Sorbonne, and Oxford. He lived mostly in England but made occasional visits to the U.S.A. In London he was editor of a publishing firm, in which capacity he discovered and supported many modern writers. His literary criticism, in such works as 'The Sacred Wood' and 'Homage to John Dryden', established the tastes of a whole generation and he became the literary doyen of his age. Recognition came to him with the publication of 'The Wasteland' - a commentary on the inhumaity of the modern city. Among his plays, 'Murder in the Cathedral' - based on the murder of Thomas Becket - became very popular. In 1948 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. www link :

Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1948. His most famous work is THE WASTE LAND, written when he was 34. On one level it descibes cultural and spiritual crisis, reflected in its use of fragmentation and discontinuity. "The point of view which I am struggling to attack is perhaps related to the metaphysical theory of the substantial unity of the soul: for my meaning is, that the poet has, not a 'personality' to express, but a particular medium, which is only a medium and not a personality, in which impressions and experiences combine in peculiar and unexpected ways." (from 'Tradition and the Individual Talent,' 1920) Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the seventh and youngest child of a distinguished family of New England origin. His forebears included the Reverend William Greenleaf Eliot, founder of Washington University in St. Louis, and on his mother's side, Isaac Stearns, one of the original settlers of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Eliot's father was a prosperous industrialist and his mother wrote among others a biography of William Greenleaf Eliot. Eliot was educated at Smith Academy in St. Louis, Milton Academy in Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard, where he contributed poetry to

THOMAS STERNS ELIOT Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in Missouri on September 26, 1888. He lived in St. Louis during the first eighteen years of his life and attended Harvard University. In 1910, he left the United States for the Sorbonne, having earned both undergraduate and masters degrees and having contributed several poems to the Harvard Advocate . After a year in Paris, he returned to Harvard to pursue a doctorate in philosophy, but returned to Europe and settled in England in 1914. The following year, he married Vivienne Haigh-Wood and began working in London, first as a teacher, and later for Lloyd's Bank. It was in London that Eliot came under the influence of his contemporary Ezra Pound , who recognized his poetic genius at once, and assisted in the publication of his work in a number of magazines, most notably " The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock " in Poetry in 1915. His first book of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations , was published in 1917, and immediately established him as a leading poet of the avant-garde. With the publication of The Waste Land in 1922, now considered by many to be the single most influential poetic work of the twentieth century, Eliot's reputation began to grow to nearly mythic proportions; by 1930, and for the next thirty years, he was the most dominant figure in poetry and literary criticism in the English-speaking world.
