Dunant never got his water rights Swiss-born Henry Dunant needed water rights for a business venture in French-controlled Algeria. The person who could get him those rights was Napoleon III. The only problem was, Napoleon III was on the battlefield in Italy. Dunant did not let that deter him, but set out for Napoleon's headquarters at Solferino in Northern Italy. Thanks to that bold venture, this Christian businessman became the first person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Thank God for the Red Cross! -an article for the October 2001 Deep Cove Crier As New York and Washington were reeling from the unexpected tragedies on September 11th, the Red Cross http://www.redcross.org/ flew into action, saving lives and bringing hope. Thank God for the Red Cross http://www.redcross.ca/ who time and again make a difference in times of great tragedy. Dunant returned to Geneva but was so preoccupied with what he has seen at Solferino that he wrote a book at his own expense in 1862 entitled ‘ A Memory of Solferino’. He wrote at length about the wounds and suffering he had seen and the shambles in which urgently necessary surgery was done. "Would it not be possible", he pleaded, "in time of peace and quiet to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime by zealous, devoted and thoroughly qualified volunteers?" On August 22nd 1864, through the impetus of Dunant’s book, the historic First Geneva Convention was birthed. It provided for the alleviation of the sufferings of soldiers wounded on the battlefield. It gave neutral status to the military hospitals and medical personnel of the armies of the signing countries. As an identifying symbol, the Geneva Convention decided that these non-combatants should wear a red cross on a white field, a reversal of the colours in the Swiss national flag. In 1865 Great Britain and Canada added their names to the first ten European countries who signed the Geneva Convention treaty.

City of Peace marks centenary of first Nobel Peace Prize to Henri Dunant
Geneva – inseparably associated with international peace – is marking the 100 years since the first Nobel Prize for Peace was awarded to Henri Dunant in 1901 for his efforts that led to the founding of the Red Cross. Certainly, in reading even today his vivid description of the Battle of Solferino (see web link below), one can understand what drove him to devote the rest of his life to the Red Cross. Today, Geneva has become the principal forum of world negotiation, and a natural home to intense diplomatic and networking activity, due to the numerous International Organizations and NGOs located in the Lake Geneva area, whose activities are central to human life (in matters of health, labour, humanitarian assistance, trade and development, telecommunications, environment, scientific research, intellectual property, sports, etc.). Geneva, the city of 67 Nobel Prizes, is a center of excellence and decision-making in multiple domains: The undertakings of these international organisations regularly place Geneva and its vicinity at the heart of world affairs.

The Nobel Peace Prize The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five international prizes awarded as a result of Alfred Nobel's will. Nobel stated that the prize be given to an individual, group or institution that "... conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" during the preceding year. A committee of five persons was to be elected by the Norwegian Parliament to determine the prize-winner. The first Nobel Prize for Peace was awarded in 1901 to Jean Henri Dunant and Frédéric Passy.
