Otto Paul Hermann Diels was born in Hamburg, Germany, on January 23, 1876. When he was two years of age the family moved to Berlin, where his father was appointed to a professorship. His early education, from 1882 to 1895, was at the Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium, Berlin. In 1895 he went to Berlin University where he studied chemistry, together with other science subjects, under Emil Fischer , graduating in 1899. He was at once appointed assistant at the Institute of Chemistry at Berlin University, becoming a lecturer in 1904. Promotion to Professor followed in 1906, and he was appointed Head of Department in 1913. He became Professor at the University of Berlin in 1915 but, the following year, moved to the University of Kiel as Professor and Director of the Institute of Chemistry. There he remained until his retirement in 1945.
His earliest research was in the field of inorganic chemistry, where he was the discoverer of an oxide of carbon having some unusual properties - carbon suboxide. His subsequent work was in the domain of organic chemistry. He was responsible for introducing the use of selenium as a specific reagent for the dehydrogenation of hydroaromatic compounds (1927). This proved to be a very useful tool in elucidating chemical structures in the complicated steroid series, where his name is associated with the hydrocarbon 3'-methyl-1,2-cyclopentenophenanthrene. Diels obtained this skeletal steroid structure by dehydrogenating cholesterol, and other members of the series, with selenium.

Diels, Otto Paul Hermann
(b. Jan. 23, 1876, Hamburg, Ger.d. March 7, 1954, Kiel, W.Ger.), German organic chemist who with Kurt Alder was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1950 for their joint work in developing a method of preparing cyclic organic compounds. Diels studied chemistry at the University of Berlin under Emil Fischer and after various appointments was made professor of chemistry at the University of Kiel (1916). He became emeritus in 1945. In 1906 Diels discovered a highly reactive substance, carbon suboxide (the acid anhydride of malonic acid), and determined its properties and chemical composition. He also devised an easily controlled method of removing some of the hydrogen atoms from certain organic molecules by the use of metallic selenium. His most important work concerned the diene synthesis, in which organic compounds with two carbon-to-carbon double bonds were used to effect syntheses of many cyclic organic substances under conditions that threw light on the molecular structure of the products obtained. This method was developed (1928) in collaboration with Kurt Alder, his student, and is known as the Diels-Alder reaction. Their work proved especially important in the production of synthetic rubber and plastics.

German chemist. In 1950 he and his former assistant, Kurt Alder , were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their research into the synthesis of organic chemical compounds.
In 1927 Diels dehydrogenated cholesterol to produce 'Diels hydrocarbon' (C18H16), an aromatic hydrocarbon closely related to the skeletal structure of all steroids, of which cholesterol is one. In 1935 he synthesized it. This work proved to be a turning point in the understanding of the chemistry of cholesterol and other steroids.
Diels was born in Hamburg and studied at Berlin. He was director of the Chemical Institute at the Christian Albrecht University in Kiel 1916-48.
Working with his assistant Alder, Diels developed the diene synthesis, which first achieved success in 1928, when they combined cyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride (cis-butenedioic anhydride) to form a complex derivative of phthalic anhydride. Generally, conjugated dienes (compounds with two double bonds separated by a single bond) react with dienophiles (compounds with one double bond activated by a neighbouring substituent such as a carbonyl or carboxyl group) to form a six-membered ring.
