His choice of career was almost dictated by that of his father, Henri Dausset, who pioneered Rheumatology in France. His medical studies progressed without incident until the advent of the Second World War, when they were interrupted. He was mobilized in 1939 and returned from the French Campaign in 1940 to a Paris occupied by the Germany Army. He began to devote his time ardently to the preparation of a competitive examination for the title of Intern of the Paris Hospitals. Upon receiving this title, he immediately left to join the fighting forces in North Africa. During the Tunisian Campaign, he performed blood transfusions in the army. This was his first introduction to immunohaematology.
While training in Algiers, he performed his first laboratory experiments and carried out his first scientific study on blood platelets.
On his return in 1944, to a liberated Paris, he was given the responsibility for collection of blood samples in the Paris area, working from the Regional Blood Transfusion Centre at

(b. Oct. 19, 1916, Toulouse, France), French hematologist and immunologist whose studies of the genetic basis of the immunological reaction earned him a share (with George Snell and Baruj Benacerraf ) of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine After serving with the Free French forces in World War II, Dausset resumed his interrupted medical studies and took his degree from the University of Paris in 1945. He pursued advanced studies at Harvard University and later became laboratory director In investigating the immunological reactions of patients who had received many blood transfusions, Dausset correctly hypothesized that a specific genetic variation among people accounted for the different levels of reaction. He eventually demonstrated the existence of a gene complex that he designated HLA (human leucocyte antigen) and that proved to be analogous to the H-2 complex in the mouse studied by Snell; both came to be seen as types of the major histocompatability complex (MHC) characteristic of all vertebrates.

Professor Jean Dausset
We are honoured to have a message from one of the world's most distinguished contributors to medical science. Professor Jean Dausset received a Nobel Prize to mark his pioneer achievements. These have formed the foundation on which tissue-typing and many other endeavours in immunology were achieved. RUN OF PAPER A Harvard professor, a scientist in Bar Harbor, Maine, and a Frenchman shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in medicine for their separate work in genetics. The three won for their discoveries on how genetic makeup determines whether a person successfully combats cancer and other diseases. The award went to genetic researchers and immunologists Baruj Benacerraf, a Venezuelan-born American citizen working at Harvard University; George Snell, of the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Frenchman Jean Dausset of the immunological laboratory of St. Louis Hospital of the University of Paris. The three share the coveted prize, this year carrying a sum of $211,000, for their work on "genetically determined structures on the cell surface that regulate immunological reactions." Dausset, who will be 64 on Oct. 19, is from Toulouse and has worked at the hospital since 1963. Interviewed by telephone in his Paris apartment, Dausset said the two Americans with whom he shared the prize were "excellent friends and, even though we didn't work together, we have been exchanging the results of our experiments for a long time." He said he had visited the others laboratories in the United States and they had visited his institution.

    Fondation Jean Dausset - CEPH
The C entre d' E tude du P olymorphisme H umain (CEPH) is a research laboratory created in 1984 by Professor Jean Dausset (Nobel Prize, medicine and physiology, 1980). This laboratory constructs maps of the human genome. The original idea of Professor Dausset was to provide the scientific community with resources for the human genome mapping. The first set of reagents is composed of DNA from 61 large families, known as the CEPH reference panel, and which serve as the reference families for establishing genetic maps of the human genome. The second set of reagents is a bank of YAC clones, used to establish the physical map of the human genome. In 1991, the CEPH and the AFM (the French muscular distrophy association) created the , a non profit research institute, in order to provide tools to the scientific community for the localization and cloning of disease determining genes. The CEPH managed the physical mapping program. After the first generation integrated map of the human genome, in December 1993, the physical mapping program returned to the CEPH.
In April 1993, the CEPH became the
