Marie Curie's Nobel Prizes
For the work they did on radioactivity that led to the discovery of polonium and radium in 1898, Marie and Pierre Curie shared the 1903 Nobel Prize. Pierre was killed in a traffic accident in 1906. Despite this loss, Marie continued her work on radioactivity and won a second Nobel Prize in 1911 for her work on radium.

Madame Curie
Madame Curie shared with her husband, Pierre Curie, the honors for discovering two radioactive elements, radium and polonium. The discovery of these elements laid the foundation for future discoveries in nuclear physics and chemistry. Marie Sklodowska was born on November 7, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland. Her early years were strongly influenced by her parents, both educators. She later joined with Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne. This made Marie the first woman to teach at the university level in France.

Marie Curie
Remarkable Scientist
Marie Curie, renowned scientist in her own right and co-discoverer of radium with her husband, Pierre, made possible many of the major medical diagnostic techniques that we all take for granted today. Anyone who has ever had an x-ray owes Marie Curie a debt of gratitude, not only for her scientific research, but for her tireless work to set up and use x-ray machines on the battlefields of Europe during World War I. Madame Curie was the special guest of honor at the dedication of Hepburn Hall for Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in 1929. Born Manya Sklodowska in Warsaw, on November 7, 1867, she was the fifth and youngest child of Bronsilawa Boguska, a pianist, singer, and teacher, and Wladyslaw Sklodowski, a professor of mathematics and physics. Even as a very young girl she was fascinated by her father’s physics equipment, and like him she was quiet and studious. A talented student with a prodigious memory, she won a gold medal on completion of her secondary education at the Russian lycée at the age of 16. She spent the next eight years working as a tutor and a governess to earn enough money to attend the Sorbonne in Paris, studying mathematics and physics in her spare time. In November 1891, Maria left Poland and registered at the Sorbonne under the French version of her first name, "Marie." At the Sorbonne she met physicists who were already well knownJean Perrin, Charles Maurain, and Aimé Cotton. Living in Spartan conditions, she graduated first in her class in physical sciences in 1893. She began to work in Lippmann's research laboratory and in 1894 placed second in mathematical sciences. During the spring she met Pierre Curie, a highly acclaimed professor at the School of Physics. They married on July 26, 1895, launching one of the most significant scientific partnerships in history.

Curie, Marie y Pierre

For some unknown reason
this looks much better in
Maria Sklodowska-Curie
The thing I've always found amazing about Marie Curie is that she was able to force her way to the top of her field, namely science, when it was considered to be exclusively for men. I admire her determination and like to think that I'm a bit like her. She was one of the great scientists of this century, with degrees in math and physics. She won two Nobel Prizes. One for Physics in 1903, and one for Chemistry in 1911. She was a pioneer in the studies of radium and polonium, and was instrumental in the understanding of radioactivity. And the research that her husband Pierre, and Marie Curie did, led to the understanding of the atom as being an entity that could be split to release enormous energy. I mean to say, can you imagine what it must have taken in patience and fortitude, to enter the world that had been, until now, forever male? But think about a world without a Marie Curie. The study to which she devoted her entire life, paved the way for medical processes that now seem almost commonplace. She was born in Poland to a very poor family. The youngest of 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. Her parents were teachers, and from them she developed a deep thirst for education. She put off going to college so that a younger sister could recieve an education. When it was her turn to go, she had to work as well as study, as money was very short.

Jobs/Positions Education Additional Information
Marie Sklodowska Curie's life and work have been written about extensively. There are excellent references available. Rather than try to summarize that information here, we give a recommended reading list below and a link to the AIP Center for the History of Physics site. In keeping with the format of this archive, we cite below the first three great discovery papers. She is sole author of the first paper identifying herself as S. Curie. The second paper was written with her husband Pierre who left his research on metals to join her studies of radioactivity.
First Important Contributions and Publications:
  • Initiated systematic studies of natural radioactivity.
"Radiations from Compounds of Uranium and of Thorium," Comptes Rendus
Conjectured the radiation, which Henri Becquerel called uranic rays, emanated from atoms of uranium, and deduced from quantitative studies of the radioactivity of samples of coal and pitchblende that there were other radioactive elements besides uranium. She coined the word radioactive. With Pierre Curie, she discovered radium, polonium, and other heretofore unknown radioactive elements.

Marie Curie 1867-1934 Marie Curie was a Polish physicist and chemist who lived between 1867-1934. Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered two new elements (radium and polonium, two radioactive elements that they extracted chemically from pitchblende ore) and studied the x-rays they emitted. She found that the harmful properties of x-rays could be used in medical treatment to kill tumors. By the end of World War I, Marie Curie was probably the most famous woman in the world. She had made a conscious decision, however, not to patent radium or its medical applications. Marie Curie was born November 7, 1867 in Poland. When she died on July 4, 1934, she was perhaps the best known woman in the world. Her co-discovery with her husband Pierre Curie of the radioactive elements radium and polonium represents one of the best known stories in modern science for which they were recognized in 1901 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1911, Marie Curie was honored with a second Nobel prize, this time in chemistry, to honor her for successfully isolating pure radium and determining radium's atomic weight.

    Marie Curie
Polish-French chemist and physicist "A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales." Introduction The early years Marie Curie was born Marya Sklodowska, the fifth and youngest child of Bronsitwa Boguska, a pianist, singer, and teacher, and Ladislas Sklodowski, a professor of mathematics and physics. Bronsitwa Sklodowski died of tuberculosis when Marya was not quite 11, leaving Ladislas Sklodowski as his daughter's chief role model. Even as a very young girl she was fascinated by his physics equipment, and like him she was quiet and studious. Marya was an outstanding student who graduated at the top of her high school class when she was only 15. She then spent eight years working as a tutor and a governess to earn enough money to attend the Sorbonne in Paris. In her spare time, she studied mathematics and physics on her own and attended a so-called "floating" university, a loosely-organized, clandestine program conducted by Polish professors in defiance of the Russians then in charge of the educational system. Finally, in November 1891, Marya left Poland and registered at the Sorbonne under the French version of her first name, "Marie."
