Nobel laureate Dr Paul Crutzen speaks at McGill March 1, 2000 Born in Amsterdam, Paul Crutzen received his PhD in meteorology from Stockholm University in 1973, producing a thesis that looked at pollution of the stratosphere by high-flying aircraft. Since 1980 he has been a member of the renowned Max Planck Institute in Mainz, Germany, and since 1992, a part-time professor at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla, California. Dr Crutzen describes his main research interests as stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry, and their role in the biochemical cycles and climate. Endowed to honour the memory of McGill Chancellor Sir Edward Beatty in 1954, the Beatty Memorial Lectures bring internationally renowned scientists, artists and literary figures from outside Canada to meet with students, faculty and staff at the University and to speak to the public on topics of widespread interest. (b. Dec. 3, 1933, Amsterdam, Neth.), Dutch chemist who received the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for demonstrating, in 1970, that chemical compounds of nitrogen oxide accelerate the destruction of stratospheric ozone, which protects the Earth from the Sun's ultraviolet radiation. He shared the honour with American chemists Mario Molina and F. Sherwood Rowland , who discovered in 1974 that manufactured chlorofluorocarbon gases also contribute to ozone depletion. Crutzen received a doctorate in meteorology from Stockholm University in 1973. He worked at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Ger. In 1970 he discovered that nonreactive nitrous oxide (N O), produced naturally by soil bacteria, rises into the stratosphere, where solar energy splits it into two reactive compounds, NO and NO . These compounds, which remain active for some time, react catalytically with ozone (O ), breaking it down into molecular oxygen (O ). His research was published that year in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society.

21 April 1999 th century. NIWA has an active atmospheric research programme measuring ozone at Lauder in Central Otago and at Arrival Heights in Antarctica. Professor Paul Crutzen, winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, and Director of the Atmospheric Chemistry Division, Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany, is among the most eminent world researchers in stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry. Professor Crutzen is in New Zealand under the auspices of the New Zealand/Federal Republic of Germany Science and Technology Agreement. He will visit atmospheric research laboratories in Auckland, Wellington and Otago, and will present a public lecture series on: "Antarctica’s ozone hole and the polluting of our atmosphere – where to next?"

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Paul J. Crutzen The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1995 In the meanwhile, on a vacation trip to Switzerland, he met a sweet girl, Terttu Soininen, a student of Finnish history and literature at the university of Helsinki. A few years later he was able to entice her to marry him. After their marriage in February, 1958, they settled in Gavle. In December of that same year their daughter Ilona was born. In March, she got a little sister, Sylvia. Ilona is a registered nurse. Her son Jamie Paul is twelve years old. Sylvia is a marketing assistant in Munchen, Germany. He was awarded the Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1995 together with Mario J. Molina and F. Sherwood "for their work in atmospheric chemistry, particularly concerning the formation and decomposition of ozone." Paul was, until about 1966, mainly involved in various meteorological projects. He was employed at the meteorological research institute. However, around 1965 he was given the task of helping a scientist from the U.S. to develop a numerical model of the oxygen allotrope distribution in the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere. This project got him highly interested in the photochemistry of atmospheric ozone and he started an intensive study of the scientific literature. This gave him an understanding of the status of scientific knowledge about stratospheric chemistry by the latter half of the 1960s, thus setting the "initial conditions"for his scientific career.

Dutch chemist who discovered that certain compounds of nitrogen and oxygen break down ozone. Ozone, a form of oxygen in the earth's upper atmosphere, shields the earth from much of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. The ozone-destroying compounds are produced in automobile exhausts and in various industrial processes.
Crutzen's work contributed to the realization in the 1970's that the earth's protective ozone layer is threatened by human activity, and the resulting environmental legislation that included laws concerning vehicle emissions.
Main Research Interests
- Global modelling of atmospheric chemical processes (2-D, 3-D) for troposphere, stratosphere and lower mesosphere ;
- Interactions of atmospheric chemistry with climate ;
- Studies of the potential role of halogen photochemistry with ozone in the marine boundary layer ;
- Tropospherical chemistry, inlcuding the role of biomass burning in the tropics and subtropics
