A Nobel cause
By Pat Hagan
European Union leaders gathering for a summit in Seville today and tomorrow no doubt already have a packed agenda. But now they have another contentious issue to mull over. Six Nobel laureates this week penned a joint letter to them criticising the EU's science policy and demanding a doubling of research funds to stem the 'brain drain' to the US. In a stinging attack, the six leading figures said fundamental change is needed if the EU is to achieve its stated goal of creating "the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010." The signatories are 1992 French physics laureate Georges Charpak , 1984 Italian Physics laureate Carlo Rubbia , 1982 British Chemistry laureate Sir Aaron Klug Bengt Samuelsson (1982), Italy's Rita Levi-Montalcini (1986) and Belgian Christian de Duve It's a carefully timed exercise designed to heighten the profile of an issue which many in the European scientific community feel has not had the attention it deserves. "It's pretty clear that we do not invest enough although the UK is worse than some other EU countries by quite a margin," said Peter Cotgreave, director of pressure group Save British Science . "The US spends more and has more attractive places where you can go and do exciting science, all because the system has more resources in it.

The Future of Nuclear Power and Nuclear Weapons
Richard L. Garwin + Georges Charpak

" Megawatts and Megatons is two books: one a good primer on nuclear power and the other a detailed discussion of nuclear weapons and potential paths for reduction in total numbers of such weapons. . . . The discussion of nuclear power and associated issues is valuable, but what makes the book unique is that Garwin and Charpak are also experts on nuclear weapons and nonproliferation." American Scientist
"A pleasure to read. . . . Should be studied by everyone concerned with the problems of nuclear power" Nature
"This book is crammed with an almost overwhelming amount of authoritative information and thought-provoking comments on two incredibly complex subjects—nuclear power and nuclear weapons—and the convoluted relationships between them. It is both a masterful exposition of mankind's ability to manipulate the atom to obliterate civilization or to serve it, and an analysis of how to avoid the former while doing the latter." History
At the end of the 19 th century, the German annexation of Alsace and Lorraine led France to lose the Chemistry School of Mulhouse, which was at that time the best French school in chemistry. In 1878, Charles Lauth, one of its teachers, tried to get from the authorities the creation of a "Grande Ecole". Its vocation was to alleviate the lack of leading-edge chemistry executives in France and to provide its students an extensive scientific education thanks to which they can adapt themselves to the fast technologic changes of the industrial revolution.
The Ecole de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles of Paris was founded in 1882, and was named ESPCI in 1948. Since the creation of the school, its founders have laid emphasis on the pluridisciplinarity of the education. This will is illustrated by the introduction of Biology in the education in 1994.
The free ESPCI's education allows students from various social backgrounds to benefit from the education of the ESPCI.
