Premio Nobel Medicina
1943 Henrik Carl Peter Dam (1895 - 1976) Denmark Polytechnic Institute. Copenhagen, Dinamarca
Edward Adelbert Doisy (1893 - 1986) EEUU, Saint Louis University , St. Louis, MO

1944 Joseph Erlanger (1874 - 1965) EEUU, Washington University, St. Louis, MO
Herbert Spencer Gasser (1888 - 1963) EEUU, Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, NY

The Lord Florey Society is so named in memory of the Nobel prize-winner and Fellow of Lincoln College, Professor Sir Howard Walter Florey, OM, later Baron Florey of Adelaide, in the Commonwealth of Australia, and Marston, in the County of Oxfordshire, through whose leadership Oxford University's first Middle Common Room for postgraduate students was established in Lincoln College, in Michaelmas Term 1958. While a Fellow of Lincoln College and Professor of Pathology, Lord Florey (and his team, whom their Lincoln colleages nicknamed the penicillini ) perfected the pioneering techniques of the clinical application and mass-production of penicillin that led to his 1945 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine (shared with Ernst Boris Chain and Sir Alexander Fleming), 'for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases'. Click on the picture for a link to the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford, where the ground-breaking research was performed. Lord Florey's links to Magdalen College, where he was a Rhodes Scholar (South Australia, 1921-1923), and The Queen's College, where he was Provost (1962-1968), are perhaps more widely known than his long and distinguished association with Lincoln College, which spanned the nearly three decades of his Professorship of Pathology, from 1934 to 1962.

DOCTORS AGAINST VIVISECTION
For over 100 years thousands of medical doctors and scientists have opposed animal experimentation in relation to human medicine:
"IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MIMIC A CHRONIC HUMAN DISEASE IN ANIMALS. The reason is that each species is BIOCHEMICALLY, IMMUNOLOGICALLY, PHYSIOLOGICALLY, AND ANATOMICALLY
UNIQUE."
"ANIMAL MODELS HAVE VIRTUALLY NO STATISTICAL PREDICTIVE VALUE."
S. Peller, "Quantitative Research in Human Biology and Medicine"
"Vivisection is rooted in error, and when the truth becomes known it will disappear."
Dr. Max Mader, G.P., Graz, 1908 "My own conviction is that the study of human physiology by way of experiments on animals is the most grotesque and fantastic error ever committed in the whole range of human intellectual activity."
Dr. G. F. Walker, Medical World, Dec 8 1933 "The idea as I understand it, is that fundamental truths are revealed in laboratory experimentation on lower animals and are then applied to the problems of the sick patient. Having been myself trained as a physiologist, I feel in a way competent to assess such a claim. It is plain nonsense."
Sir George Pickering, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford, British Medical Journal, Dec 26 1964

Sir Henry was aware of the necessity for the development of geology as an applied science to assist the major industries in Britain. Coal mining was the basic industry which supplied fuel for the industrial capability of Britain. It was essential to industry to be able to mine the best coal by the cheapest possible method, and to have a knowledge of ores and minerals which could also be exploited to the economic good of the country.

Better Mice Help Biotech Start-up - An Israeli Drug Group Has a Unique Source of Revenue
Financial Times By Avi Machlis; Feb 5, 2002
The search for new drugs is never a simple task but finding treatments for Alzheimer's disease, the degeneration of the brain that afflicts one in 10 people over the age of 65, has been a particularly daunting struggle for medical researchers.
Not only is it still unclear what exactly causes the devastating disease but research has moved forward at a snail's pace owing to the time it takes for test mice to develop the ailment. Clinical studies are extremely expensive. Last month the quest for a cure was dealt a big blow when Elan, the Irish pharmaceuticals company, suspended a particularly promising line of research after four patients in clinical trials developed inflammation of the brain.
That setback, however, may give a boost to a small biotechnology start-up based in Jerusalem called Mindset, which claims to be on track towards a similar but safer drug. Furthermore, unlike many cash-strapped biotech start-ups that are years away from products and revenues, Mindset has engineered a better mouse that is already generating revenues to sustain the drug-development drive.
"We are a very unusual company in that we have intermediate and long-term sources of revenues," says Daniel Chain, the British-born chief executive and founder of Mindset. "And our source of revenues today is also a source of core drug discovery technology."
